The long-term effects of free care on birth outcomes: Evidence from a national policy reform in Zambia

Mylene Lagarde et al.

Summary: This study utilized the staggered removal of user charges in Zambia to estimate its impact on institutional deliveries, caesarean sections, and neonatal deaths. The research found that while removing fees had a positive effect on institutional deliveries, especially two years after the policy change, it did not alter the behaviors of women with lower education levels, the proportion of caesarean sections, or reduce neonatal mortality.

Universal health coverage and the poor: to what extent are health financing policies making a difference? Evidence from a benefit incidence analysis in Zambia

Martin Rudasingwa et al.

Summary: This study examines the distributional incidence of health spending in Zambia between 2006 and 2014, focusing on the effects of healthcare financing reforms on different socioeconomic groups. The findings show that the implementation of universal health coverage policies has led to a reduction in socioeconomic inequality in health spending, particularly in health centers and curative care. However, there are still barriers for the poor to benefit from healthcare spending on curative services and higher levels of care.

Application of verbal autopsy in routine civil registration in Lusaka District of Zambia

C. Chabila Mapoma et al.

Summary: Verbal autopsy methods proved to be effective in determining causes of deaths outside health facilities in Lusaka District, Zambia. Results showed that opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS, malaria, external causes, and non-communicable diseases were leading causes of deaths among bodies brought-in-dead. The application of VA in civil registration system can provide crucial cause of death information for non-facility deaths in countries with under-developed civil registration systems.
