Family experiences and perceptions of intensive care unit care and communication during the COVID-19 pandemic

R. Digby et al.

Summary: This study examines the care and communication experiences of family members of ICU patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in Melbourne. Families were significantly impacted by the restrictive measures, particularly the limited number and duration of visits. Some family members experienced extreme stress and anxiety during their absence from the patient's bedside. Communication with clinicians varied, and better alternatives to face-to-face communication should be explored to mitigate the mental health effects of family separation.

Effective communication is key to intensive care nurses' willingness to provide nursing care amidst the COVID-19 pandemic

Heidi Lord et al.

Summary: The study found that although the majority of ICU nurses were concerned about spreading COVID-19 to their family, 61% of nurses were still willing to care for COVID-19 patients. The main predictor of nurses' willingness to care was receiving timely communication from managers. Effective communication is crucial in promoting nurses' willingness to care for patients during a public health emergency.
