KEGG for taxonomy-based analysis of pathways and genomes

Minoru Kanehisa et al.

Summary: KEGG is a manually curated database resource that integrates various biological objects classified into systems, genomic, chemical, and health information. Through the KEGG identifier and URL links, users can retrieve and browse information for different biological objects, including pathway maps, hierarchy, and genomes. KEGG has also improved KO assignment annotation and included more eukaryotic genomes for better representation of organisms in the taxonomic tree. The taxonomy mapping enables analysis of the conservation of functional and physical links among genes in different organism groups.

An in situ hybridization study of syndecan family during the late stages of developing mouse molar tooth germ

Kaoru Fujikawa et al.

Summary: The expression patterns of syndecan-1, 2, 3, and 4 mRNAs during late tooth germ formation were investigated. Syndecan-1 mRNA was mainly expressed in specific tooth germ regions and its expression in dental epithelium increased during the postnatal periods. Syndecan-3 mRNA was found to be involved in dentinogenesis, while syndecan-2 showed enhanced expression with hard tissue formation. Syndecan-4 exhibited similar expression patterns to syndecan-3.

Spatiotemporal diversity and regulation of glycosaminoglycans in cell homeostasis and human disease

Amrita Basu et al.

Summary: Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are long polysaccharides found on the cell surface and extracellular matrix of animal cells, and play important roles in cellular processes and diseases. GAGs are complex molecules with extensive structural and functional heterogeneity, and their biosynthesis is a non-template driven process involving a group of enzymes. Due to their key roles in cell homeostasis and disease, targeting the assembly and function of GAGs is of great interest as a therapeutic approach.

Single cell atlas of developing mouse dental germs reveals populations of CD24+ and Plac8+ odontogenic cells

Yaofeng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the spatiotemporal relationships during odontogenesis were explored using single cell RNA sequencing and chromatin assays. The researchers traced cell trajectories and created a cell lineage atlas of developing mouse teeth. They identified specific transcriptome profiles of mesenchymal cells and key gene regulatory networks involved in tooth and bone formation. Additionally, they discovered a novel tissue called Plac8 with the ability to induce tooth regeneration.

Glycosaminoglycan-Protein Interactions: The First Draft of the Glycosaminoglycan Interactome

Sylvain D. Vallet et al.

Summary: GAGs play crucial roles in interacting with various biomolecules in different physiological and pathological contexts. Researchers have provided an overview of GAG-protein interactions and presented a comprehensive network composed of 832 biomolecules (827 proteins and five GAGs) and 932 protein-GAG interactions. This contextualized interactome could potentially identify druggable GAG-protein interactions for therapeutic purposes.

The Role of Chondroitin Sulfate Proteoglycans in Nervous System Development

Caitlin P. Mencio et al.

Summary: The orderly development of the nervous system involves phases of cell proliferation and differentiation, neural migration, axonal outgrowth, and synapse formation, with chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) playing a key role. Evidence of CSPGs' involvement in neural development is complex and sometimes contradictory, highlighting the need for further research to uncover their mechanisms of action.

Glypican 4 mediates Wnt transport between germ layers via signaling filopodia

Bo Hu et al.

Summary: The study in zebrafish reveals that Glypican 4 (Gpc4) influences signaling pathways by regulating morphogen traffic and reception, mediating Wnt5b and Wnt11f2 transport via signaling filopodia. This mechanism provides a new insight into the in vivo distribution of morphogens involving Gpc4.

Heparan Sulfate Biosynthesis and Sulfation Profiles as Modulators of Cancer Signalling and Progression

Catarina Marques et al.

Summary: Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans (HSPGs) play important roles in orchestrating cellular events in physiology and pathology by modulating cell signaling networks and cell interactions. The structural features of HS chains are crucial for the functions of HSPGs, influencing protein interactions and signaling. The tightly controlled biosynthetic pathway of HS leads to structural diversity, which is differently regulated in various tissues, developmental stages, and pathologies such as cancer.

Lumican in Carcinogenesis-Revisited

Eirini-Maria Giatagana et al.

Summary: Lumican, a proteoglycan involved in the formation of the extracellular matrix, plays an important role in cellular processes associated with tumorigenesis and tumor progression. It has been reported to have either a positive or negative correlation with tumor progression in various cancer tissues. There is potential for lumican to serve as a cancer prognosis marker, chemoresistance regulator, and cancer therapy target.
