Immunonutrition and prehabilitation in pancreatic cancer surgery: A new concept in the era of ERAS? and neoadjuvant treatment

Raffaele De Luca et al.

Summary: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a highly aggressive disease with poor prognosis. Neoadjuvant treatments are recommended for borderline resectable and upfront resectable PC. Malnutrition and nutritional imbalance are common in PC, and can negatively impact postoperative and oncological outcomes. Implementing actions and programs to improve nutritional interventions and optimize quality of life for PC patients is important. Current studies and guidelines support the use of medical nutrition to prevent infections and decrease hospital stay. Medical nutrition should be considered proactively to prevent severe malnutrition and its consequences on disease outcomes in PC patients.

The Fistula Risk Score Catalog Toward Precision Medicine for Pancreatic Fistula After Pancreatoduodenectomy

Maxwell T. Trudeau et al.

Summary: This study aims to present different patient presentations of pancreatic fistula risk and define the effectiveness of mitigation strategies in the most prevalent and vulnerable scenarios for surgeons. Through analysis of data from multiple international institutions, specific scenarios and optimal mitigation approaches associated with CR-POPF occurrence were identified.

Pancreatic Cancer Prognosis, Malnutrition Risk, and Quality of Life: A Cross-Sectional Study

Kalliopi-Anna Poulia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the interrelation between nutritional parameters, QOL indicators, and survival outcomes in patients with pancreatic cancer. The results showed that nutritional risk was associated with age, dynamometry, and financial difficulties. Increased fatigue, higher prevalence of constipation, and increased reporting of gastrointestinal problems were all linked to lower survival. These findings highlight the importance of early identification and management of symptoms and nutritional status in pancreatic cancer patients.

Perioperative Nutritional Support: A Review of Current Literature

Antonio Jesus Martinez-Ortega et al.

Summary: Reducing postoperative complications and promoting early recovery have always been important goals in surgical practice. Malnutrition plays a major role in hindering postoperative recovery. Perioperative nutritional support, including preoperative and postoperative interventions, has been shown to significantly improve surgical outcomes.

The impact of immunonutrition on pancreaticoduodenectomy outcomes

Xuanji Wang et al.

Summary: The impact of immunonutrition on length of stay, infection rates, postoperative pancreatic fistula, and delayed gastric emptying was investigated in cancer patients undergoing a pancreaticoduodenectomy. The results showed that immunonutrition was associated with increased intraabdominal infection and postoperative pancreatic fistula, and decreased delayed gastric emptying. However, in pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients, no significant association was found between immunonutrition and length of stay, infections, postoperative pancreatic fistula, or delayed gastric emptying.

Utility of preoperative systemic inflammatory biomarkers in predicting postoperative complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy: Literature review and single center experience

Alessandro Coppola et al.

Summary: Preoperative inflammatory biomarkers may serve as predictors of postoperative complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). CRP levels were significantly associated with postoperative complications and abdominal collections, while preoperative derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) was a strong predictor of abdominal collection. The combination of CRP and dNLR further increased the predictive positive value.
