Intrapartum antibiotics and childhood asthma and allergic rhinitis: a retrospective cohort study

Summary: In a retrospective cohort study, researchers found a significant increase in the use of intrapartum antibiotics among women over a 20-year period, while the incidence of asthma and allergic rhinitis remained relatively stable. Adjusted models showed that the association between intrapartum antibiotics and asthma/allergic rhinitis risk was largely inconclusive, with only slightly elevated risk ratios observed.

Evidence of the fetal inflammatory response syndrome was frequently present, but microorganisms were detected in only 4.9% of cases based on cultures of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in neonatal blood.

Summary: Baseline increase (>10%) during labor along with loss of cycling with or without features of tachysystole or hyperstimulation should be considered as features of ongoing chorioamnionitis. Chorioamnionitis confirmed on histopathology is associated with an increase in the rate of cesarean sections due to fetal heart rate changes, increased risk of wound infection in mothers, and increased admission of babies to SCBU.
