Use of combined oral contraceptives and risk of venous thromboembolism in young women: a nested case-control analysis using German claims data

Tania Schink et al.

Summary: This study compared the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among young women using different combined oral contraceptives (COCs). The results showed that COCs containing dienogest, cyproterone, chlormadinone, desogestrel, and drospirenone had a two-fold increased risk of VTE compared to COCs containing levonorgestrel with low ethinylestradiol (<50 μg). Gestodene-containing COCs had a five-fold increased risk of VTE. Norgestimate and nomegestrol had a two-fold and 40% increased risk, respectively.
