Enhanced photocatalytic oxidation degradability for real cyanide wastewater by designing photocatalyst GO/TiO2/ZSM-5: Performance and mechanism research

Yubo Pan et al.

Summary: A simple and effective photocatalyst with enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic activity was developed by combining graphene oxide, nano titanium dioxide, and silicon-based zeolite. The experiments showed that the GO/TiO2/ZSM-5 composite photocatalyst with 60% TiO2 content had the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency under ultraviolet wavelength, reaching 98.73% and 98.96% for total cyanide and copper degradation, respectively. XPS analysis revealed that cyanide was degraded to carbon oxide and nitrogen oxide, while copper and zinc were removed in the form of copper (II) and zinc (II).

Alkaline-extracted cyanide from cassava wastewater and its sole induction of chromosomal aberrations in Allium cepa L. root tips

Adewale Kayode Ogunyemi et al.

Summary: The study found that cassava wastewater from processing factories in Nigeria contains cyanide compounds, leading to toxic effects on the environment and biological organisms. While chemical degradation can reduce the cyanide content, it still results in chromosomal aberrations and cytotoxic effects in cells.

Carbon-based catalyst for environmental bioremediation and sustainability: Updates and perspectives on techno-economics and life cycle assessment

Vivek Kumar Gaur et al.

Summary: The global increase in waste generation has led to environmental concerns and waste management issues. Researchers have been interested in producing carbon-rich biochar from waste using different thermochemical processes. Biochar has diverse applications, from environmental remediation to energy storage, and its production is influenced by factors such as feedstock type, moisture content, heating rate, and temperature. The cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly nature of biochar have contributed to its growing popularity. This review discusses the preferred feedstock for optimizing biochar yield, factors influencing production, biochar activation approaches, synthesis techniques, and various applications of biochar. It also explores integrated closed loop approaches for biochar generation and identifies research gaps and future perspectives.

Kinetic Study of Fungal Growth of Several Tanninolytic Strains Using Coffee Pulp Procyanidins

Leidy Johana Valencia-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the consumption of procyanidins by Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma harzianum strains in submerged fermentations. The addition of procyanidins increased the formation of micellar biomass, while the use of glucose affected the growth of the strains. Therefore, these strains can be used as a natural strategy for the consumption or removal of procyanidins.

Plants exert beneficial influence on soil microbiome in a HCH contaminated soil revealing advantage of microbe-assisted plant-based HCH remediation of a dumpsite

Ispreet Kaur et al.

Summary: The persistence of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) pesticide in soil poses a major challenge for disposal, with microbial communities in plant rhizospheric soils showing higher diversity and richness compared to non-plant soil. Selected plants at contaminated sites have accumulated HCH residues from soil and positively influenced soil microbial communities, supporting the use of microbe-assisted plant-based bioremediation strategies for HCH contamination.

Simultaneous Bioremediation of Cyanide, Phenol, and Ammoniacal-N from Synthetic Coke-Oven Wastewater Using Bacillus sp. NITD 19

Abhilasha Rai et al.

Summary: The study focused on the simultaneous removal of pollutants from synthetic coke-oven wastewater using a bacterial isolate, Bacillus sp. NITD 19. The most effective conditions were determined through OVAT analysis, resulting in high removal rates of phenol, ammoniacal-N, and cyanide from both individual aqueous solution and SCW. The biomass extracted from SCW solution was found to be lower than that obtained from treating individual pollutants, as confirmed by FTIR and SDS-PAGE analysis.

Biodegradation of cyanide in cassava wastewater using a novel thermodynamically-stable immobilized rhodanese

Adedeji Nelson Ademakinwa et al.

Summary: Extracellular rhodanese from Aureobasidium pullulans was used in both free and immobilized forms for the biodegradation of cyanide in cassava processing mill effluent. The immobilized rhodanese via cross-linking before entrapment showed higher thermal resistance and degradation efficiency compared to free enzyme and entrapment in alginate alone. The study suggests that immobilized rhodanese in this form is suitable for large-scale detoxification of cyanide from cassava processing mill effluent.

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopic Analyses of Microbiological Samples and Biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles of Microbial Origin: Sample Preparation Effects

Alexander A. Kamnev et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the importance of sample preparation in FTIR spectroscopy of microbiological materials by comparing bacterial biomass samples and selenium nanoparticles. Grinding of biomass samples results in slight shifting of bands, while longer drying times lead to more reproducible FTIR spectra. SeNPs contain capping layers of proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids, with carboxylated components present in the bioorganic capping but largely removed after washing.
