Development of multiple inhibitor tolerant yeast via adaptive laboratory evolution for sustainable bioethanol production

Hemansi et al.

Summary: The adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) improved thermotolerant ethanologenic yeast by increasing specific growth rate and fermentation efficiency in the presence of inhibitors. The adapted yeast showed enhanced ethanol production from sequential dilute acid-alkali pretreated sugarcane bagasse, making bioethanol production more sustainable with reduced cost and time.

Fed-batch simultaneous saccharification and fermentation including in-situ recovery for enhanced butanol production from rice straw

Alejo Valles et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that fed-batch SSFR can enhance butanol production efficiency from alkaline-pretreated rice straw, with increased productivity and efficient enzyme utilization. Although additional nutrients were required, the approach showed promise for improving biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass.

Sugarcane bagasse based biorefineries in India: potential and challenges

Kakasaheb S. Konde et al.

Summary: Sugarcane bagasse is a common agricultural residue, with approximately 100 million tonnes produced annually in India. Currently used for cogeneration of steam and power, there is potential for more sustainable methods of utilization. Biorefineries focusing on biogas and bioethanol production, along with high-value chemicals like xylitol, succinic acid, and lactic acid, could provide a profitable and eco-friendly solution for sugar mills' waste management.
