Rapid start-up and humification of kitchen waste composting by an innovative biodrying-enhanced process

Liqing Xin et al.

Summary: An innovative biodrying-enhanced composting (BEC) system has been developed to rapidly process kitchen waste (KW) into highly matured products by applying biodrying as the start-up stage of composting. The performance and potential mechanisms of rapid start-up and humification in the BEC system were explored through a continuous pilot experiment. The results showed that the BEC system achieved highly matured products with a germination index of 91.85%-112.08% and a humification index of 6.21-6.36, using a 9-day retention time. The biodrying stage of 24 hours significantly accelerated KW dehydration and the start-up of the composting process. The stage-enriched bacteria and yeast rapidly decomposed macromolecular substances and generated precursors for humic acid synthesis, leading to the formation of stable humic acid during the humification stage.

Heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria in wastewater biological nitrogen removal systems: A review

Shoupeng Duan et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria (HNB) have the potential to play an important role in wastewater biological nitrogen removal (BNR) engineering due to their ability to use organic compounds, proliferate rapidly, and achieve simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the physiological characteristics, phylogenetic diversity, bioaugmentation applications, and activity detection of HNB in wastewater BNR systems. Understanding the contribution of HNB to ammonia oxidization in the presence of various autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms is crucial for the control, improvement, and optimization of wastewater BNR systems.
