Acid stress and compost addition decouple carbon and nitrogen cycling in an agricultural soil: An incubation study

Patricia Lazicki et al.

Summary: The study found that agricultural practices can lead to fluctuations in soil pH and salinity, affecting soil nutrient cycling. Compost addition can mitigate these impacts. Results showed that sulfur induced strong acidity and mild salinity stress, limiting microbial growth more than respiration. Surprisingly, compost consistently stimulated net N mineralization in stressed soils, exacerbating the effects of stress on this process.

Driving factors of nitrogen conversion during chicken manure aerobic composting under penicillin G residue: Quorum sensing and its signaling molecules

Jie Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different concentrations of penicillin G on nitrogen conversion, bacterial community composition, and quorum sensing during chicken manure aerobic composting. The addition of penicillin G was found to impact the abundance of specific bacterial genera, predominantly from Firmicutes and Proteobacteria phyla. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that penicillin G increased nitrification and reduced denitrification, while the quorum sensing system played a negative regulatory role in the nitrogen conversion process.

Aerobic composting of chicken manure with penicillin G: Community classification and quorum sensing mediating its contribution to humification

Jie Kang et al.

Summary: The presence of antibiotics in chicken manure can disrupt the collaboration between bacterial communities and their ability to regulate humification. Penicillin G mainly affects low-abundance microbial genera, but different bacterial communities may have similar ecological functions. Quorum sensing influences humic acid synthesis by regulating carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism in bacterial communities.

Antimicrobial peptide antibiotics inhibit aerobic denitrification via affecting electron transportation and remolding carbon metabolism

Na Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of polymyxin B (PMB) on aerobic denitrification performance. The results showed that PMB decreased nitrate removal efficiency and drove denitrifiers to transform more nitrate to biomass instead of producing gas-N. PMB also damaged bacterial membrane and suppressed key enzymes participating in denitrification and aerobic respiratory chains. In addition, denitrifiers exhibited different preferences for carbon sources in the presence of PMB.

Diversity-stability relationships in temperate grasslands as a function of soil pH

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: The diversity-stability relationships in grasslands are influenced by environmental factors and changes in soil pH. This study found that altered soil pH had negative impacts on community biodiversity and stability, especially in desert grasslands. Soil acidification and alkalization reduced community stability in desert and typical grasslands, respectively. However, altered soil pH did not affect community stability in meadow grasslands. The study also revealed that changes in soil nutrients, mediated by soil acidification and alkalization, were associated with species asynchrony and indirectly influenced community stability.

Similar geographic patterns but distinct assembly processes of abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities in river networks of the Taihu Basin

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Bacterioplankton in river networks of the Taihu Basin exhibit significant temporal variation in diversity, structure, and taxonomic composition. The assembly process of bacterioplankton communities is influenced by both stochastic and deterministic processes, with pH and dissolved oxygen identified as major environmental factors. Abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities show similar geographic patterns but distinct assembly processes, with abundant communities shaped by stochastic processes and rare communities dominated by deterministic processes.

The nitrogen cycle and mitigation strategies for nitrogen loss during organic waste composting: A review

Hong Giang Hoang et al.

Summary: Composting is a promising technology for decomposing organic waste into high-quality compost, but greenhouse gas and odorous emissions are major concerns. The nitrogen cycle plays a crucial role in compost quality, and therefore, operational parameters, microbial activities, enzymes, and genes affecting the nitrogen cycle need to be considered, along with mitigation strategies for nitrogen loss.

Microbial habitat specificity largely affects microbial co-occurrence patterns and functional profiles in wetland soils

Chi Liu et al.

Summary: Microbial species with different niche breadth have distinct habitat ranges. The combination of specialists and generalists can affect microbial co-occurrence patterns and functional characteristics. This study found that communities with more specialists have simpler co-occurrence patterns, and soil electrical conductivity is the most significant factor in structuring this relationship. The functional differences between specialists and generalists reflect the characteristics of microbial co-occurrence patterns and biogeochemical cycles.

Temperature mediated the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes and reoccurrence of microbial community during treating aniline wastewater

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: Seasonal temperature changes have a significant impact on microbial community diversity, composition, and performance in wastewater treatment plants. This study investigated the effects of temperature on microbial performance and co-occurrence networks, as well as the assembly processes that determine the structure and function of microbial communities during aniline wastewater treatment. The results showed that functional redundancy played a role in maintaining excellent microbial performance throughout the process. The balance between stochastic and deterministic processes mediated the reoccurrence of microbial communities and co-occurrence networks at different temperatures.
