Lignin-First Depolymerization of Lignocellulose into Monophenols over Carbon Nanotube-Supported Ruthenium: Impact of Lignin Sources

Shihao Su et al.

Summary: Ru/CNT catalyst exhibits high selectivity and yield towards lignin hydrogenolysis. The yields of aromatic monomers are related to lignin sources and decrease in the order: hardwoods > herbaceous plants > softwoods. The scission of C-O bonds and the high selectivity to monomeric aromatic compounds over the Ru/CNT catalyst are enhanced by avoiding side condensation. The fabricated Ru/CNT shows good reusability and recyclability, applicability, and biomass feedstock compatibility.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Derived Copper Catalysts for the Hydrogenolysis of Lignin into Monomeric Phenols

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a copper-based catalyst derived from a metal-organic backbone is presented for the reductive catalytic fractionation of woody sawdust, which offers high yields of propyl and propanol end-chain monomeric phenols. The catalyst is found to effectively cleave aryl ether linkages, promoting the conversion of lignin into valuable compounds.

Continuous hydrodeoxygenation of lignin to jet-range aromatic hydrocarbons

Michael L. Stone et al.

Summary: This study reports a continuous, two-stage catalytic process using molybdenum carbide to convert lignin into aromatic hydrocarbons. The results show high selectivity and carbon recovery. Tier a fuel property testing indicates that the lignin-derived aromatic compounds may have performance advantages over conventional jet fuel aromatic compounds.

Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolics to cycloalkanes over Ni-Co alloy coupled with oxophilic NbOx

Chengzhi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, bifunctional catalysts composed of Ni-Co alloy and NbOx support were synthesized for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction of lignin-derived phenolics. The catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity and selectivity, thanks to the uniform composition of the Ni-Co alloy, oxygen vacancies provided by the NbOx support, and the synergistic catalysis between them.

Insights into bamboo delignification with acidic deep eutectic solvents pretreatment for enhanced lignin fractionation and valorization

Wen-Xin Li et al.

Summary: An acidic biomass-derived DES pretreatment was developed to enhance lignin fractionation from bamboo, resulting in lignin samples with higher thermal stability and excellent antioxidant activity. The use of acidic DES as a low-cost, high-performance delignification method with long-term durability and thermal stability is highlighted for potential applications in lignin-based chemicals and materials.

Unlocking the potential of biofuels via reaction pathways in van Krevelen diagrams

Diana Catalina Palacio Lozano et al.

Summary: The production of fuels and targeted chemicals from biomass is a current challenge, where pyrolysis generates complex bio-oils that require further upgrading for effective use in engines. Van Krevelen diagrams can be used to understand the compositional changes and possible reaction routes that favor molecules with increased energy density. Proposed reaction vectors in these diagrams can help inform future production strategies, aiming to increase the energy density of bio-oils while reducing undesirable char formation.
