Design considerations for the auditory brain computer interface speller

Ivan Markovinovic et al.

Summary: Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems aim to facilitate interaction with the outside world by translating measured brain signals into instructions. This study proposes a novel two-stage auditory BCI system design that stimulates subjects with letter pronunciations, reducing their mental effort. The system uses a convolutional neural network for letter discrimination and introduces a second stage to improve accuracy and usability. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed BCI system outperforms state-of-the-art auditory BCI spellers in terms of spelling accuracy and information transfer rate when tested on healthy subjects.

Simultaneous multiple-stimulus auditory brain-computer interface with semi-supervised learning and prior probability distribution tuning

Mikito Ogino et al.

Summary: This study proposes a double-stimulus paradigm for auditory brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to increase the number of available commands without sacrificing selection speed. By incorporating semi-supervised learning (SSL) and prior probability distribution tuning, the BCI accuracy and information transfer rate (ITR) are improved. The results demonstrate that this approach can enhance BCI performance while increasing the number of commands.

EEG-Based Auditory Attention Detection and Its Possible Future Applications for Passive BCI

Joan Belo et al.

Summary: Discriminating and attending to a specific sound source in a complex auditory environment is crucial for effective communication, especially for those with hearing impairments or cochlear implants. Recent advancements in EEG-based auditory attention detection have shown promise in identifying the attended speech stream within multiple concurrent streams, opening up possibilities for next-generation hearing aids and passive BCI applications.

Semi-Supervised Learning for Auditory Event-Related Potential-Based Brain-Computer Interface

Mikito Ogino et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of SSL techniques on two public auditory BCI datasets - AMUSE and PASS2D, using various machine learning algorithms. Overall, most data were apparently improved by SSL in all cases, with the overall accuracy logarithmically increasing with every additional unlabeled data. This study supports the positive effect of SSL techniques and encourages future researchers to apply them to auditory ERP-based BCIs.
