Transcriptomic analysis of the liver in aged laying hens with different eggshell strength

G. P. Han et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential factors affecting eggshell strength in aged laying hens at the hepatic transcriptomic level. Through RNA-sequencing, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between hens with strong and weak eggshell strength were identified. The DEGs were found to be associated with various pathways such as the mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway and the Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway. Genes related to fatty liver disease and oxidative stress were also found to be altered in aged laying hens with different eggshell strength. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the hepatic molecular mechanism underlying decreased eggshell strength in aged laying hens.

Eggshell Membrane as a Biomaterial for Bone Regeneration

Adriana Torres-Mansilla et al.

Summary: The physicochemical features of the avian eggshell membrane have a crucial role in calcium carbonate deposition and shell mineralization, resulting in a highly porous mineralized tissue with excellent mechanical properties and biological functions. The eggshell membrane can serve as a bi-dimensional scaffold for bone-regenerative materials. It is cost-effective and widely available as a waste byproduct, making it suitable for repurposing in bone bio-material manufacturing.

Preparation and Characterization of Antibacterial Films with Eggshell-Membrane Biopolymers Incorporated with Chitosan and Plant Extracts

Brian Cameron Wooding Webb et al.

Summary: Novel films containing chitosan, eggshell membrane, and plant extracts were prepared and found to have good fluid absorption and degradation properties. The films showed microenvironmental pH levels that promote wound healing. Films containing 5% plant extracts inhibited the growth of E. coli without affecting fluid absorption.

Eggshell membrane derived nitrogen rich porous carbon for selective electrosorption of nitrate from water

Jiao Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the selective removal of nitrate (NO3-) in an electrosorption process using a thin, porous carbonized eggshell membrane (CESM). The CESM exhibits high selectivity for NO3- over other ions and achieves a significantly higher NO3-/Cl- selectivity compared to activated carbon electrodes. This high selectivity leads to a reduction in energy consumption for nitrate removal.

Egg Shell Membrane as an Alternative Vascular Patch for Arterial Angioplasty

Peng Sun et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that egg shell membrane (ESM) has the potential to yield rapid re-endothelialization in vitro, making it a promising vascular graft in the clinic. Heparin-coated ESM (HESM) also showed strong anticoagulation properties in vitro and in vivo, indicating its potential for decreasing mural thrombus formation after rat aortic patch angioplasty.
