An injectable supramolecular nanofiber-reinforced chitosan hydrogel with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties as potential carriers for drug delivery

Hao Yuan et al.

Summary: This study fabricated composite hydrogels with an interpenetrating network structure by introducing a self-assembly active small molecule, puerarin (PUE), into chitosan (CS) hydrogels. The results showed that PUE significantly enhanced the performance of CS hydrogels and densified the network structure of the composite hydrogels. These composite hydrogels exhibited pH sensitivity, injectability, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Crosslinkers for polysaccharides and proteins: Synthesis conditions, mechanisms, and crosslinking efficiency, a review

Alex Carvalho Alavarse et al.

Summary: Polysaccharides and proteins are essential macromolecules for biomedical hydrogels. Chemical hydrogels, which have chemical bonds mediated by crosslinkers, offer better chemical, mechanical, and dimensional stability compared to physical hydrogels. This review revisits the crosslinking reactions between synthetic or natural crosslinkers and polysaccharides or proteins. It discusses the mechanisms, evaluation methods, and challenges in creating safe chemical hydrogels for biomedical applications.
