Divergent mineralization of hydrophilic and hydrophobic organic substrates and their priming effect in soils depending on their preferential utilization by bacteria and fungi

Shaohong Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mineralization and priming effect of hydrophilic and hydrophobic organic compounds extracted from (13)C-labelled maize residues when incubated with soils. Results showed that the metabolism rate and priming effect of these compounds varied between different microbial groups and soil types. The findings highlight the importance of understanding microbial mechanisms in the stabilization and destabilization processes of soil organic matter.

Competition and community succession link N transformation and greenhouse gas emissions in urine patches

Syaliny Ganasamurthy et al.

Summary: Urea triggers shifts in soil microbial communities by selecting for fast-growing microbial groups and reducing overall diversity. The addition of inhibitors can recover lost diversity and decrease N2O emissions. Fungi play a significant role in N2O emissions, with dominant fungal populations consistently replaced at different stages of succession.

Fungal denitrification revisited - Recent advancements and future opportunities

Nouf Aldossari et al.

Summary: Fungi play a key role in the nitrogen cycle by reducing nitrate and nitrite to gaseous nitrogen oxides. However, fungal N2O production may not be solely related to denitrification, and experiments should be carefully conducted to discriminate between different nitrate/nitrite reduction processes. Various analytical tools have been developed to study fungal denitrification, offering insights for future research opportunities.

Sergei Polme et al.

Summary: The article introduces a database FungalTraits to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of fungi, discussing the challenges between molecular identification of fungal diversity and knowledge of functional traits. Through the involvement of expert knowledge and tools, researchers reannotated a large number of fungal and Stramenopila genera, summarizing them into 17 lifestyle-related traits suitable for environmental studies.
