High frequency of extreme precipitation increases Stipa grandis biomass by altering plant and microbial nitrogen acquisition

Shuhai Wen et al.

Summary: The study found that high frequency extreme precipitation events can enhance plant productivity and nitrogen acquisition by reducing the proportion of nitrogen forms available for plants and soil microorganisms in temperate grasslands. This shift in precipitation frequency creates optimal conditions for ecosystem functions in response to extreme climate events.

Impact of N application rate on tea (Camellia sinensis) growth and soil bacterial and fungi communities

Sheng Tang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that moderate nitrogen fertiliser application is an effective strategy to increase tea yield and quality in tea plantations. Bacterial diversity and community responses to nitrogen addition are more pronounced than fungal diversity and community responses. Nitrogen addition directly affects the diversity and communities of bacteria and fungi, and indirectly affects bacterial community and fungal diversity by altering soil contents.

Plant-microbial competition for amino acids depends on soil acidity and the microbial community

Wankun Pan et al.

Summary: Soil acidification affects the competition between maize and microorganisms for organic nitrogen. Acidification alters the microbial community composition and decreases the decomposition rates of proteins, peptides, and amino acids, while increasing the uptake of glycine by maize roots.

The Escherichia coli Amino Acid Uptake Protein CycA: Regulation of Its Synthesis and Practical Application in l-Isoleucine Production

Christine Hook et al.

Summary: Amino acid transport systems play important roles in microbial production of amino acids, and their significance in metabolic engineering should be acknowledged. This study characterizes the protein CycA, which is responsible for the uptake of nonpolar amino acids, and investigates its expression and substrate range. The overexpression of CycA enhances the import of specific amino acids and leads to a reduction in undesirable impurities. The expression of cycA is regulated by extracellular amino acid concentrations, with Lrp and Crp identified as potential transcription factors involved in its expression.

The priming effect dynamics are driven by microbial activation and growth and constrained by the relative availability of input C and soil N

Futao Zhang et al.

Summary: Fresh organic inputs can stimulate the decomposition of soil organic matter and the release of soil mineral N. However, the impact of soil mineral N change on this process is still uncertain. This study investigated the changes in microbial biomass, enzyme activities, and soil mineral N after glucose addition, and found complex responses in the soil.

Microorganisms maintain C:N stoichiometric balance by regulating the priming effect in long-term fertilized soils

Zhenke Zhu et al.

Summary: Labile carbon inputs can affect the soil carbon:nitrogen ratio and microbial stoichiometric homeostasis, which in turn control the intensity and direction of the priming effect (PE). Soil microorganisms can regulate enzyme production and PE to maintain the C:N stoichiometric balance. The experiment showed that excess carbon from glucose addition can increase N-hydrolase production and N mining from soil organic matter, leading to positive PEs initially, but eventually resulted in negative PEs as C:N microbial biomass ratio increased and DOC:NH4+ ratio decreased.

Substrate control of sulphur utilisation and microbial stoichiometry in soil: Results of 13C, 15N, 14C, and 35S quad labelling

Qingxu Ma et al.

Summary: Global plant sulphur deficiency is on the rise due to reduced application of sulphate-based fertilisers and continuous S withdrawal during harvest. Research using quad labeling of S-containing amino acids in soil showed that soil microorganisms quickly absorbed and released sulfur compounds, with the release and reutilization being determined by amino acid structure. Short-term organic sulfur utilization in soil is determined by amino acid structure, while long-term utilization is controlled by microbial stoichiometry.

Stoichiometric imbalance and microbial community regulate microbial elements use efficiencies under nitrogen addition

Jing Li et al.

Summary: In a temperate forest, low nitrogen addition significantly increased microbial CUE in organic soil while high nitrogen addition significantly reduced it; meanwhile, microbial CUE in mineral soil did not change under low nitrogen addition but significantly increased under high nitrogen addition. Microbial NUE decreased with increasing nitrogen addition rate in organic soil, but showed an opposite pattern in mineral soil.

Grassland conversion to cropland decreased microbial assimilation of mineral N into their residues in a Chernozem soil

Xueli Ding et al.

Summary: The conversion of grassland into cropland decreased the assimilation rate of nitrogen into microbial residues, while enhancing responses depending on carbon sources. The addition of available and complex carbon substrates in cropland triggered different accumulation patterns of (15) N-amino sugars. Conversion of grassland suppressed nitrogen immobilization activities of both fungi and bacteria.

The inhibition effect of tea polyphenols on soil nitrification is greater than denitrification in tea garden soil

Sheng Tang et al.

Summary: Tea polyphenols, especially EGCG, have a significant inhibitory effect on soil nitrification by reducing the abundance of ammonia oxidizing microorganisms. The inhibition effect of tea polyphenols on nitrification is more pronounced compared to denitrification. Additionally, tea polyphenols enhance the diversity of bacterial community in soil.
