Proteomic Response to Environmental Stresses in the Stolon of a Highly Invasive Fouling Ascidian

Xi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular response of a highly invasive fouling ascidian, Ciona robusta, to environmental challenges using quantitative proteomics technology. Key pathways involved in stolon structure stability, protein synthesis, and stress response activation were identified under both temperature and salinity stresses. The results provide valuable candidate pathways and associated genes for studying harsh environmental adaptation mechanisms and developing antifouling strategies in marine ecosystems.

Testing ecological theories in the Anthropocene: alteration of succession by an invasive marine species

Kayla A. Christianson et al.

Summary: Ecologists use a variety of theories to explain ecological patterns and processes, testing their consistency in an ever-changing world. The recent study in North Carolina found that the colonial tunicate Clavelina oblonga has become a dominant component of the marine fouling community, leading to changes in community structure and reduction in species diversity.

Genetic analyses reveal cryptic diversity in the widely distributed Styela canopus (Ascidiacea: Styelidae)

Rodolfo Correa de Barros et al.

Summary: The routine use of DNA sequencing techniques combined with phylogenetic analysis has led to the discovery of numerous cryptic species, particularly in the oceans. The common global species Styela canopus is suspected to be a complex of at least 15 species, suggesting it should be treated as the Styela canopus complex. The high diversity of cryptic species found indicates the need for better understanding of their reproductive isolation, hybridization, and speciation, especially as some lineages have been widely introduced worldwide.
