Control strategies for atmospheric pressure plasma polymerization of fluorinated silane thin films with antiadhesive properties

Giulia Laghi et al.

Summary: The validity of the Yasuda parameter W/FM as a controlling parameter for plasma polymerization is demonstrated using an atmospheric pressure single electrode plasma jet. Thin films deposited under different W/FM values exhibit different chemical and physical properties. Coatings with similar characteristics can be obtained regardless of the power and feed rate values adopted. Preliminary results show that the deposited coatings have antiadhesive activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.

How perfluoroalkyl substances modify fluorinated self-assembled monolayer architectures: An electrochemical and computational study

Giulia Moro et al.

Summary: There is an urgent need for sensing strategies to screen perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous matrices. Changes in fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (SAM) with different architectures were studied upon exposure to both long and short-chain PFAS. The applicability of fluorinated SAM in PFAS sensing was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and voltam-metric techniques, supported by molecular dynamics simulations. Pinhole/defect-free fluorinated SAM were found to be applicable to long-chain PFAS screening using a switch-on sensing strategy, while a switch-off sensing strategy was reported for screening of both short/long-chain PFAS.

Hydrophobicity of Self-Assembled Monolayers of Alkanes: Fluorination, Density, Roughness, and Lennard-Jones Cutoffs

Shane Carlson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interplay of fluorination and structure on the hydrophobicity of alkane self-assembled monolayers through molecular dynamics simulations, and reveals a linear relationship between wetting coefficients and monolayer density. An increase in Lennard-Jones force cutoff in simulations is found to enhance hydrophilicity, while nanoscale roughness reliably increases monolayer hydrophobicity by reducing the entropic part of the work of adhesion. Additionally, the larger contact angles of perfluorinated alkane monolayers are attributed to their larger molecular volume.

Antifouling Coatings Generated from Unsymmetrical Partially Fluorinated Spiroalkanedithiols

Lydia R. St Hill et al.

Summary: Biofouling has negative impacts on key industries such as medicine, oil, and shipping. Research shows that antifouling coatings prepared from unsymmetrical partially fluorinated spiroalkanedithiols demonstrate better performance in preventing fouling on metal substrates compared to monodentate counterparts.
