Microalgae cultivation using palm oil mill effluent as growth medium for lipid production with the effect of CO2supply and light intensity

Prakash Bhuyar et al.

Summary: Malaysia is a major producer and exporter of palm oil, generating millions of tons of palm oil mill effluent (POME) annually. POME, a major environmental pollutant, also contains nutrients and minerals suitable for microbial-based applications like wastewater treatment and biofuel production. Cultivating microalgae in enriched POME has been explored as an effective method to utilize POME and increase biomass yield for applications like biodiesel production.

Lipid accumulation and profiling in microalgae Chlorolobion sp. (BIOTECH 4031) and Chlorella sp. (BIOTECH 4026) during nitrogen starvation for biodiesel production

Eldrin Dlr Arguelles et al.

Summary: Lipid-accumulating microalgae, such as Chlorolobion sp. and Chlorella sp., showed increased lipid yield and decreased biomass production under nitrogen-starved culture conditions. The obtained algal biodiesel exhibited high concentrations of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters, making them suitable for biodiesel production. Additionally, the biodiesel properties of the two microalgae met the set specifications of biodiesel standards EN 14214 (European) and ASTM D6751 (American), indicating their potential as raw materials for biodiesel production with superior fuel quality.

Effects of light intensity and nutrients on the lipid content of marine microalga (diatom) Amphiprora sp. for promising biodiesel production

Saravanan Jayakumar et al.

Summary: In this research, Amphiprora sp. was identified with the highest lipid content for potential biodiesel production. The study focused on optimizing growth parameters and lipid yield in a modified nanomaterial culture medium. Future investigations should explore the use of different nanomaterials in the culture medium to enhance lipid production in microalgal cells.

Rapid indicators for monitoring the health of Chlamydomonas nivalis biomass during preservation

E. Bemejo-Padilla et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential indicators of microalgae biomass viability during storage/preservation, with pulse-amplitude-modulation technique proving to be a valuable indicator of culture viability. The measurements of DNA and chlorophyll in the supernatant also provided satisfactory results, with three suitable biomarkers identified for quality assessment.
