Unveiling hidden sponge biodiversity within the Hawaiian reef cryptofauna

Jan Vicente et al.

Summary: Our perception of reef diversity is mainly focused on visible groups like corals and fish, but the bulk of biodiversity resides within the reef framework, particularly the cryptobiota which plays a fundamental role in the surface community. Sponges, especially cryptobenthic species, are abundant in productive reefs but largely unnoticed in surveys of oligotrophic reefs of Oceania. By exploring cryptobenthic sponges in Hawaiian reefs, we discovered a significant number of new species, increasing our knowledge of the sponge fauna in the area and demonstrating the importance of integrating taxonomy for poorly understood marine organisms.

High connectivity within restricted distribution range in Pocillopora corals

Nicolas Oury et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Pocillopora coral morphospecies are species complexes, found predominantly in the Indian or Pacific Oceans. Within each species, there is relatively high genetic diversity and connectivity. Weak connectivity was observed between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, while high connectivity was found within each ocean basin.

Summary: This study evaluated the suitability of the MEOW system in representing species distributions within Indo-West Australian waters, identifying seven distinct ecoregions and 13 subecoregions. Depth and sea surface temperature were found to be the main environmental drivers of species distributions.

A Soft Spot for Chemistry-Current Taxonomic and Evolutionary Implications of Sponge Secondary Metabolite Distribution

Adrian Galitz et al.

Summary: Marine sponges are important sources for discovering novel bioactive compounds, with their secondary metabolites being sought-after for pharmaceutical applications. Understanding the distribution of metabolites to sponge lineages is crucial for revealing compound production pathways and evolution, potentially leading to more efficient bioprospecting.

Marine biodiversity of a pristine coral reef in French Polynesia

David Lecchini et al.

Summary: The study in French Polynesia revealed that Tupai atoll, which has been uninhabited and protected since 2010, showed a low density of commercial fish species and top-predators on the outer reef slope compared to the lagoon. However, the outer slope of Tupai had a high living coral cover of 46%, possibly due to the absence of tourism and local pollution. This initial scientific assessment provided insights into the spatial patterns of coral, macro-invertebrates, and fish assemblages in the absence of human impacts, which can inform conservation strategies for coral reef ecosystems.
