Lipidic cubic phase serial femtosecond crystallography structure of a photosynthetic reaction centre

Petra Bath et al.

Summary: Serial crystallography is a rapidly growing method that allows for structural analysis of microcrystals that were previously considered too small for conventional X-ray crystallography. In this study, the authors describe the conditions for growing microcrystals of Blastochloris viridis photosynthetic reaction center within a lipidic cubic phase (LCP) crystallization matrix, resulting in improved crystal diffraction resolution. Incorporation of ubiquinone into the LCP media enables the observation of structural changes associated with electron-transfer reactions.

Electron Transfer Route between Quinones in Type-II Reaction Centers

Summary: The study found that there are differences in the electron transfer pathways in photosynthetic reaction centers from purple bacteria and photosystem II, which are attributed to the presence of a water molecule providing a hydrogen bond and differences in the protein environments.

Mechanism of the formation of proton transfer pathways in photosynthetic reaction centers

Yu Sugo et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the electron and proton transfer process of the secondary quinone QB in photosynthetic reaction centers from purple bacteria, identifying PT pathways involving Grotthuss-like pre-PT H-bond network and low-barrier H-bond formation. The findings also reveal a water molecule chain connecting protonated Glu-L212 and deprotonated His-L190, serving as a pathway for reprotonation of His-L190.
