Isolation and Elucidation of Bacterial Melanin's Sun Protection Factor (SPF) for Photoprotection in Cosmetics

Trisha Mary Pandipilly Antony et al.

Summary: This study isolated and evaluated the sun screening activity of melanin amyloliquefaciens STGRDV11, Bacillus subtilis STGRDV5, and Bacillus cereus STGRDT12. All isolates were tested against fungal melanin STGRDM1 as control. The formulated creams containing 5% and 10% melanin had Sun Protection Factors (SPF) ranging from 1.96 +/- 0.008 to 26.33 +/- 0.061. Transmission spectroscopy was used to calculate the percentage of protection factor, indicating the potential sunscreen effect of pigments.

Denitrifying halophilic archaea derived from salt dominate the degradation of nitrite in salted radish during pickling

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: This study identified the microbial groups responsible for the natural degradation of nitrite in salted radish and elucidated the associated metabolic mechanism. Halophilic archaea from pickling salt dominate the denitrification pathway, with key genera including Haloarcula, Halolamina, and Halobacterium. These archaea cope with high salt stress through a salt-in mechanism and efficiently reduce nitrite to nitrogen, providing important insights for nitrite hazard prevention in high-salinity salted vegetables.

C50 carotenoids extracted from Haloterrigena thermotolerans strain K15: antioxidant potential and identification

Fevziye Isil Kesbic et al.

Summary: The study characterized a halophilic and thermophilic archaeon, Haloterrigena thermotolerans K15, and investigated its carotenoid contents. The carotenoid extract from this archaeon showed significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to reference compounds such as ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene.

Carbon Source Influences Antioxidant, Antiglycemic, and Antilipidemic Activities of Haloferax mediterranei Carotenoid Extracts

Micaela Giani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different concentrations of carbon sources on the production of haloarchaeal carotenoids and their antioxidant activity. The findings suggest that altering the nutritional conditions can optimize carotenoid production and modify their composition, resulting in more active carotenoid extracts with potential applications in the food and nutraceutical industries.

Ubiquitousness of Haloferax and Carotenoid Producing Genes in Arabian Sea Coastal Biosystems of India

Jamseel Moopantakath et al.

Summary: This study compared halophiles in global open sea and coastal biosystems through shotgun metagenomes, finding that Prochlorococcus and Candidatus pelagibacter were enriched in the open sea, while Marinobacter and Alcanivorax dominated coastal biosystems. Haloarcula and Haloquandratum archaea were significantly enriched in coastal biosystems. The study also confirmed the viability and carotenoid pigment production by Haloferax isolates from sediments, which showed multidrug resistance and suitability for bioprospection in coastal biosystems.
