The antioxidant tempol transforms gut microbiome to resist obesity in female C3H mice fed a high fat diet

Rajani Choudhuri et al.

Summary: The study found that the nitroxide Tempol can prevent obesity-related changes in mice fed a high fat diet by regulating fatty acid metabolism genes, gut microbiome composition, and bile acids composition. Even after antibiotic treatment, Tempol still showed positive effects on certain beneficial bacterial species and reducing weight gain in female mice fed a high fat diet.

Faecal microbiota transplantation-mediated jejunal microbiota changes halt high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice via retarding intestinal fat absorption

Luoyi Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) can prevent high-fat diet-induced obesity and lipid metabolism disorders by altering the jejunal microbiota composition and increasing the abundance of Lactobacillus and Romboutsia, which are negatively correlated with obesity-related indicators. The anti-obesity effect of wild boar faecal suspension is associated with jejunal N6-methyladenosine (m(6)A) levels. Overall, these results suggest that FMT has a mitigating effect on HFD-induced obesity by altering microbial composition and structure of the jejunum.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth-Pathophysiology and Its Implications for Definition and Management

Daniel Bushyhead et al.

Summary: The concept of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) explains the cause of maldigestion and malabsorption. With the development of diagnostic testing, the methods for diagnosing SIBO have evolved from small bowel culture to breath tests and culture-independent microbial analytics. The availability of breath tests has led to an expansion in the diagnosis of SIBO and the associated clinical symptoms. However, issues with the specificity of breath tests have raised doubts about the role of SIBO in certain clinical scenarios. The hope is to use modern molecular microbiology to study the human small intestinal microbiome in order to provide an objective basis for diagnosing SIBO.

Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth Can Form an Indigenous Proinflammatory Environment in the Duodenum: A Prospective Study

Evripidis Rizos et al.

Summary: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is associated with an inflammatory environment, leading to elevated levels of cytokines. Elevated IL-1β levels have a significant association with SIBO, while elevated IL-6 and TNF-α levels have no significant association with SIBO. Methanobevibacter smithii is positively related to elevated IL-1β levels, while Klebsiella pneumoniae is positively related to elevated IL-6 and TNF-α levels.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) after bariatric bypass procedures and its connection with symptoms, comorbidities, and liver pathology. The results showed a alarmingly high incidence of SIBO after bariatric surgery and suggested that diagnosis cannot be based solely on specific symptoms. The study also found a correlation between SIBO and reduced response to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) application.
