Insect rearing on biowaste represents a competitive advantage for fish farming

Josef Marousek et al.

Summary: This review study focuses on the key aspects of incorporating insects into established intensive aquaculture practices. It identifies the black soldier fly larvae as the most versatile insect in terms of available biowaste for rearing, automation and scaling up, nutritional value, circularity, and environmental benefits. Modifying insect diets can increase the levels of valuable compounds in fish. Other insects such as ants or mealworms also have the potential to meet the nutritional requirements of different fish species. Intensified industrialization of insect rearing could reduce production costs and have positive economic impacts and environmental spillover effects.

Recent progress in flocculation, dewatering, and drying technologies for microalgae utilization: Scalable and low-cost harvesting process development

Ki Ha Min et al.

Summary: Research on microalgae has advanced in the high-value industrial application of microalgal biomass and its derivatives, but cost-effective techniques for producing, harvesting, and processing microalgal biomass on a large scale still need to be fully explored. Selecting the appropriate harvesting technique must consider the characteristics of the target microalgae and the type of final value-added products. Developing scalable and low-cost microalgal harvesting systems is crucial for future directions in flocculation, dewatering, and drying steps.

Summary: The economic feasibility of using microalgae as a biofuel feedstock is not satisfactory, therefore it is necessary to produce high-value co-products from microalgae. Microalgae-based wastewater treatment has lower energy consumption compared to conventional methods, but there are bottlenecks in microalgae biorefinery. Promoting the sustainable development of microalgal biorefinery with innovative ideas is important.

Demetallization of Sewage Sludge Using Low-Cost Ionic Liquids

Joseph G. Yao et al.

Summary: This study focused on utilizing low-cost ionic liquids for complexing toxic metals in sewage sludge, showing promising results in efficiently separating metal contaminants. Specifically, [Hmim]Cl exhibited a high extraction rate for Cd-II, Ni-II, Zn-II, and Pb-II, while [TEA][HSO4] was more effective in removing Cr-III, Cr-VI, and As-III. Recycling [Hmim]Cl and exploring the use of electrochemical deposition for preventing metal buildup in the IL were also discussed, offering new possibilities for sewage sludge valorization.
