Deep-shallow coupling response of the Cenozoic Bohai Bay Basin to plate interactions around the Eurasian Plate

Guangzeng Wang et al.

Summary: The Bohai Bay Basin is an intracontinental petroliferous basin in East China that has undergone complex deformational and evolutionary processes. By studying the basin, the researchers have identified various geodynamic mechanisms that explain the deep and shallow responses and processes of the basin in the Cenozoic.

Growth and linkage of normal faults experiencing multiple non-coaxial extension: A case from the Qikou Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, East China

Shunyu Wang et al.

Summary: The study on the Nandagang fault system (NDGFS) revealed three vertically separated fault systems, each with different development stages. The faults experienced both lengthening and displacement accrual stages, with varying timelines among different segments. Slip rates and pre-existing faults play a significant role in determining the duration of fault lengthening stages.

The tectonic transition from rifting to strike-slip in the Liaodong Bay Depression, offshore China

Xingpeng Chen et al.

Summary: The Liaodong Bay Depression underwent a tectonic transition from rifting to strike-slip, with the transition occurring from the Palaeocene to the early Oligocene. This transition resulted in the formation of oil and gas accumulation zones, making the area promising for oil and gas exploration.

Cenozoic extension to strike-slip transition in the Liaodong Bay Subbasin along the Tan-Lu Fault Zone, Bohai Bay Basin: New insights from stress field modelling

Panpan Hu et al.

Summary: This paper presents four best-fit finite element models based on seismic data interpretations to reveal the tectonic development of the Liaodong Bay Subbasin and the Bohai Bay Basin in eastern China. The change in extension directions led to a strike-slip transition of the Tan-Lu Fault Zone from normal to dextral transtensional in the middle-late Eocene, transforming the basins from extensional to dextral transtensional. This transformation was likely triggered by the kinematic adjustment of the Pacific Plate in the middle-late Eocene and maintained by the Indian-Asian collision in the rest of the Cenozoic.

Structural characteristics and mechanism of the Hengshui accommodation zone in the southern Jizhong subbasin, Bohai Bay basin, China

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: Based on seismic data, this study investigates the differences in geological structure and evolution on both sides of the Hengshui Accommodation Zone (HAZ). The results indicate that the northern part of the HAZ is a half-graben controlled by double detachment faults with opposite dips, while the southern part is a compound half-graben controlled by a single detachment fault with multiple faults. The study also identifies three segments along the HAZ and highlights the importance of regional stress field transfer in the formation and evolution of the HAZ.

Fault reactivation in No.4 structural zone and its control on oil and gas accumulation in Nanpu sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China

Lu Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the reactivation mechanism of the pre-existing basement F-4 strike-slip fault in Nanpu sag based on seismic and drilling data, and its controlling effect on hydrocarbon accumulation difference. The findings show that the F-4 fault was reactivated by strike-slip faulting during the sedimentary period of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation and by oblique extension during the sedimentary periods of Paleogene Dongying Formation and Neogene Guantao-Minghuazhen formations. The reactivation of the F-4 fault has significant controlling effects on hydrocarbon accumulation, including vertical cross-layer migration, distribution of sand bodies, and trap formation.

Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the eastern Liaodong Bay sub-basin, Bohai Bay basin, eastern China-Constraints from seismic data

Jingshuang Luo et al.

Summary: The eastern Liaodong Bay sub-basin has undergone phases of extension, strike-slip, and inversion-type deformation. The formation of fault patterns and anticlines in this area is mainly influenced by the movement of the Tan-Lu strike-slip fault zone.

Geometric and kinematic analysis of normal faults bordering continental shelves: A 3D seismic case study from the northwest South China Sea

Shouxiang Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates normal faults bordering the continental shelf of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea, using high-quality 3D seismic data. The analysis reveals the faults predominantly tip out in the Upper Miocene and proposes a new three-stage model for fault reactivation in the basin. The evolution of normal faults on the continental shelf is attributed to regional-scale structures and large-scale slope instability in the area.

Differential faulting in a narrow rift basin influenced by synchronous strike-slip motion: The Liaodong Bay sub-basin, offshore Bohai Bay Basin, China

Nan Jia et al.

Summary: During the synrift stage of the Liaodong Bay sub-basin, strike-slip motion within the Tan-Lu Fault Zone played a significant role in local structural evolution, leading to abundant structural deformations. However, the exact role of TLFZ in the evolution of the Bohai Bay Basin remains unclear.

Normal Fault Kinematics and the Role of Lateral Tip Retreat: An Example From Offshore NW Australia

Bailey A. Lathrop et al.

Summary: Understanding how normal faults grow is crucial for determining the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of rifts. Recent studies suggest that normal faults develop in two distinct stages: a lengthening stage and a throw/displacement accumulation stage. This study in particular reveals that normal faults experience changes in length and throw accumulation as they progress through different stages of their lifespan, with a decrease in surface trace length as the faults become inactive.

Indian plate structural inheritance in the Himalayan foreland basin, Nepal

Michael J. Duvall et al.

Summary: The research findings reveal that the foreland basin behind the Himalayas is influenced by various factors in geological processes, including basement structure, flexure, and faulting. The subsidence of the foreland basin is mainly controlled by the Indian Plate, and basement features play a crucial role in the development of the foreland basin.

Summary: The study highlights the different evolution stages of sags in the Bodong segment, influenced and not influenced by the Tanlu Fault Zone, with structural changes impacting hydrocarbon migration. The variations in basin development are attributed to the impact of structural changes on the migration of depocenters and activity of faults.

The Andaman Basin Central Fault Zone, Andaman Sea: Characteristics of a major deepwater strike-slip fault system in a polyphase rift

Thananchai Mahattanachai et al.

Summary: The seismic data from Thailand waters in the Andaman Sea revealed a major NNE-SSW trending strike-slip fault known as the Andaman Basin Central Fault Zone. This fault developed during a change in extensional activity from E-W to ENE-WSW in the Oligocene-earliest Miocene period. The distinctive structural style of the regionally dominant R' shears is believed to be a result of NNW-SSE extension related to the northwards movement of the Indian Plate relative to SE Asia.
