Petroleum systems in a buried stratovolcano: Maturation, migration and leakage

Karsten F. Kroeger et al.

Summary: Buried volcanic systems have the potential for hydrocarbon exploration and fluid storage, but the integrity of the seal and the structural evolution play a crucial role in their potential. Leakage of hydrocarbon and greenhouse gases from volcanos could have significant global implications.

3-dimensional trapdoor structure of laccolith-induced doming and implications for laccolith emplacement, Pampa Amarilla, Mendoza Province, Argentina

Olivier Galland et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanics and structural evolution of dome formation caused by laccolith emplacement is crucial for the understanding of laccolith dynamics and growth. In this study, a 3D reconstruction of a subsurface laccolithic intrusion in Pampa Amarilla, Argentina, was achieved through the integration of surface geological data and subsurface 3D seismic and borehole data. The results show that trapdoor tilting of the laccolith's overburden is the main mechanism controlling the thickening and growth of the laccolith, suggesting faulting commonly controls emplacement of laccoliths with a high thickness-to-length ratio. The study highlights the importance of integrating field geological measurements with subsurface data for structural reconstructions of laccolith intrusions.

Emplacement and Segment Geometry of Large, High-Viscosity Magmatic Sheets

Tobias Schmiedel et al.

Summary: Understanding magma transport in sheet intrusions is crucial for volcanic unrest interpretation. A study of high-viscosity dykes in Chachahuen volcano reveals segments with bifurcations and different shapes at the tips, similar to trends in low-viscosity dykes. This challenges the use of final sheet geometries as proxies for emplacement mechanism.

Fracture networks in shale-hosted igneous intrusions: Processes, distribution and implications for igneous petroleum systems

Ole Rabbel et al.

Summary: Igneous intrusions in sedimentary basins can impact basin-scale fluid flow and petroleum systems in different ways, acting as barriers, pathways, or reservoirs for fluids. Understanding of fracturing mechanisms and their effects on fracture network properties is limited, but a field study in Argentina provides evidence of various mechanisms affecting the fracture network. These mechanisms, including cooling joints and bituminous dykes, play a role in hydrocarbon migration and storage, with bitumen dykes and faults locally altering the fracture network to improve reservoir properties.
