Permanent grasslands in Europe: Land use change and intensification decrease their multifunctionality

Rene L. M. Schils et al.

Summary: Permanent grasslands in Europe are crucial for providing various ecosystem services, but their area has been declining over time. This review found that land use change and increased management intensity have negative impacts on the multifunctionality of grasslands. Preserving permanent grasslands and adopting low-intensity management practices are important for preserving ecosystem services.

A closer look at the functions behind ecosystem multifunctionality: A review

Gina Garland et al.

Summary: In recent years, studies on ecosystem multifunctionality have increased, but there is still a lack of consistency in determining and measuring appropriate functions. Views on ecosystem functions vary depending on the field of ecology.

Assessing the impact of grassland management on landscape multifunctionality

M. Neyret et al.

Summary: This study combines comprehensive data from 150 German grassland sites with a simulation approach to identify landscape compositions that minimize trade-offs between different ecosystem services. They found that an optimal landscape composition can be identified for any pattern of ecosystem service priorities, and strategies with both high and low intensity grasslands present can deliver landscape multifunctionality. The results can aid informed decision-making by predicting the impact of future changes in landscape composition and understanding the roles of stakeholder priorities and biophysical trade-offs.

Organic and conservation agriculture promote ecosystem multifunctionality

Raphaeel A. Wittwer et al.

Summary: A long-term farming system experiment evaluated and compared the agronomic, economic, and ecological performance of organic, conservation, and conventional agriculture in Europe, finding that organic and conservation agriculture promote ecosystem multifunctionality by enhancing regulating and supporting services. In contrast, conventional cropping shows reduced multifunctionality but highest yield. Organic production results in higher economic performance due to higher product prices. The different cropping systems provide opposing services, highlighting the productivity-environmental protection dilemma for agroecosystem functioning.

Combatting global grassland degradation

Richard D. Bardgett et al.

Summary: Grasslands provide crucial ecosystem services, but are often overlooked in sustainable policy. Degradation of grasslands threatens biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. Strategies to combat degradation and promote restoration include increasing global recognition of grasslands, developing standardized indicators, using scientific innovation for effective restoration, and enhancing knowledge transfer and data sharing. These actions can help halt degradation, enhance restoration success, and protect the socio-economic, cultural, and ecological benefits that grasslands provide.
