Bio-economic modelling of sheep meat production systems with varying flock litter size using field data

Summary: This study uses field data and statistical relationships to analyze the impact of litter size on flock productivity and gross margin. The results show that increasing litter size leads to a higher proportion of multiple births and increased flock gross margin. However, there is diminishing economic returns at very high litter sizes.

Summary: Ewe wastage is a combination of on-farm mortality and premature culling. This study is the first to report actual wastage incidence and causes in commercial sheep flocks in New Zealand. Pre-mating body condition score was identified as a predictor of wastage.
