Characteristics of fatal 'novel' synthetic opioid toxicity in Australia

Shane Darke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics, toxicology, and autopsy findings of fatal drug poisoning cases involving novel synthetic opioids (NSOs) in Australia. The results showed that most cases were unintentional and involved young males. Various NSOs were identified, along with the presence of other substances. The study highlights the importance of understanding the use and impact of NSOs in order to develop effective prevention and harm reduction strategies.

Suicidal motivations among opioid overdose survivors: Replication and extension

Hilary S. Connery et al.

Summary: Desire to die is common among individuals with opioid use disorder before nonfatal opioid overdose, with approximately 1 in 5 people with a history of overdose reporting intention to die prior to their most recent overdose. This population also tends to underestimate the risk of overdose. Careful assessment of suicidal cognition may help improve prevention of opioid overdose deaths.

An Evaluation of the Effect of the OxyContin Reformulation on Unintentional Fatal and Nonfatal Overdose

Daniel C. Beachler et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of OxyContin's reformulation on overdose risk and found that the reformulation did not have a significant effect on overdose incidence in insured patients under regular medical care. However, a modestly reduced OxyContin-associated overdose risk was observed in commercially insured individuals receiving single-opioid regimens.

Prevalence and correlates of multiple non-fatal opioid overdoses among people who inject drugs who utilise needle syringe programs in Australia

Louise Geddes et al.

Summary: Multiple non-fatal opioid overdoses were prevalent among people who inject drugs accessing needle syringe programs in Australia. Injecting in a public location and benzodiazepine use were associated with an increased risk of multiple overdoses. Intervention strategies targeting these high-risk injecting practices are needed.

Characteristics of Suicides and Toxicology in a Cohort of Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder

Philippe Pfeifer et al.

Summary: This study examined suicides in individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and found that they were younger, had a history of suicide attempts, were more often female, and predominantly used intentional self-poisoning with medication as the method of suicide. The combination of benzodiazepines with antidepressants was commonly found in cases of self-poisoning with drugs compared to violent suicide methods. These findings provide important insights for the monitoring and prevention of suicides in individuals with OUD.
