An episode of transboundary air pollution in the central Himalayas during agricultural residue burning season in North India

Sujan Khanal et al.

Summary: The Indo-Gangetic Plain experiences hazardous air pollution levels due to agricultural residue burning, impacting the air quality in the central Nepali Himalayas. Transboundary transport of aerosols from northwest India was found to be responsible for a spike in PM2.5 levels in Kathmandu. The episodic transport of pollutants beyond the Mahabharat range is controlled by synoptic and mesoscale dynamics in the region.

Trends in the types and absorption characteristics of ambient aerosols over the Indo-Gangetic Plain and North China Plain in last two decades

S. Ramachandran et al.

Summary: The inadequate understanding of atmospheric aerosols, especially in Asia, is identified as a major source of uncertainty in climate change according to the sixth assessment report released by the IPCC in 2021. This study provides the first analysis of the climatology and trends of different types of aerosols in Kanpur, South Asia, and Beijing, East Asia, using high-quality time series of observations and satellite data. The findings reveal significant changes in aerosol characteristics over the two regions, which are crucial for improving the understanding of aerosol-climate interactions in Asia.

Wintertime Air Quality in Lumbini, Nepal: Sources of Fine Particle Organic Carbon

Md Robiul Islam et al.

Summary: The study in Lumbini, Nepal, shows that PM in the Indo-Gangetic Plains is mainly sourced from biomass burning, with organic carbon, elemental carbon, and secondary inorganic ions as the main components. During periods of fog, concentrations of nitroaromatic compounds decrease while levoglucosan remains high, indicating potential suppression of their formation by fog.

Wintertime chemical characteristics of aerosol and their role in light extinction during clear and polluted days in rural Indo Gangetic plain

Saifi Izhar et al.

Summary: This study reports the chemical and light extinction characteristics of fine aerosol (PM2.5) during the winter period (2017-18) at Lumbini, Nepal. The chemical constituents of PM2.5 showed varying characteristics during clear and polluted days, with an increase in secondary organic and inorganic contributions on polluted days. Total light extinction and PM2.5 mass concentration were higher on polluted days compared to clear days, with different chemical components having a more considerable impact on light extinction.

Identifying the dominant local factors of 2000-2019 changes in dust loading over East Asia

Wenrui Yao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interannual variation of dust aerosols in East Asia from 2000 to 2019 and identified the dominant factors affecting this variation during the dusty season. The study found a significant decrease in dust mass density in East Asia after 2000, especially during the period from March to July. The decreases were correlated with increases in normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), volumetric soil moisture (VSM), and precipitation (PPT), as well as a decrease in wind speed (WS), with different factors dominating in different regions.
