Tropical cyclone climatology change greatly exacerbates US extreme rainfall-surge hazard

Avantika Gori et al.

Summary: Changes in tropical cyclones will increase the risk to US coastlines, with the largest contribution coming from increased storm intensity and decreased translation speed. The joint hazard of extreme rainfall and storm tides is expected to drastically increase in future conditions, leading to a potential 7-36-fold increase in the frequency of joint extreme events in the southern US and a 30-195-fold increase in the Northeast by 2100.

Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Database Created by the China Meteorological Administration

Xiaoqin Lu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the access to and characteristics of the tropical cyclone (TC) database maintained and actively developed by the China Meteorological Administration, which records data on all TCs passing through the western North Pacific and South China Sea since 1949. With continuous TC monitoring and multi-source data collection, the database now comprises a wide range of information related to TCs, supporting ongoing research into TC climatic activity and forecasting.

A height-resolving tropical cyclone boundary layer model with vertical advection process

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: The height-resolving boundary layer wind field model incorporating both vertical advection and vertical diffusion processes can reasonably simulate the wind fields of tropical cyclones, producing a more realistic three-dimensional wind structure in the boundary layer.

Elevated risk of tropical cyclone precipitation and pluvial flood in Houston under global warming

Laiyin Zhu et al.

Summary: Pluvial floods caused by tropical cyclones pose a major concern for coastal communities. Through coupling downscaled TCs from Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models with physical hydrological models, it is demonstrated that there will be a significantly elevated risk of TC rainfall and flood in a future warming world. Factors such as slower TC translation speed, more frequent stalling, increased TC frequency, and higher rain rate contribute to the increased risk, particularly affecting smaller watersheds with high urbanization levels.
