Measurement report: Characterization of sugars and amino acids in atmospheric fine particulates and their relationship to local primary sources

Ren-Guo Zhu et al.

Summary: Sugars and amino acids are important organic components in atmospheric fine particles and play significant roles in atmospheric processes. However, little is known about their sources in different regions. In this study, fine particulate matter samples were collected from urban, rural, and forest areas in Nanchang, China to investigate the local primary sources and their contributions to the total sugar compound and amino acid pool. The results showed that biomass burning, plant, and soil sources all contribute to aerosol sugars and amino acids in the three areas. The urban area is mainly influenced by local combustion sources, while the rural and forest areas have significant contributions from local topsoil sources.

Molecularmarkers for fungal spores and biogenic SOA over the Antarctic Peninsula: Field measurements and modeling results

Junjun Deng et al.

Summary: The study on biogenic organic aerosols in Antarctica found higher concentrations of sugar alcohols and biogenic SOA tracers in summer compared to winter. Fungal-spore organic carbon, isoprene-derived secondary OC, and monoterpene-derived SOC contributed 26.2%, 55.6%, and 18.2% respectively. Model results suggest higher biogenic SOA in East Antarctica than in West Antarctica.

Significance of the organic aerosol driven climate feedback in the boreal area

Taina Yli-Juuti et al.

Summary: Aerosol particles can cool the climate by scattering solar radiation and acting as cloud condensation nuclei. Research suggests that warmer temperatures lead to increased emissions of biogenic secondary organic aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei concentrations, creating a negative climate feedback mechanism. Direct observations using aerosol chemical composition measurements and remote sensing observations revealed a clear increase in organic aerosol loadings and cloud condensation nuclei concentration with temperature in a boreal forest environment.
