Fast, Slow, Early, Late: Quenching Massive Galaxies at z ∼ 0.8

Sandro Tacchella et al.

Summary: In this study of 161 massive galaxies at z(obs) = 0.8, a diverse range of star formation histories was identified, with a link between dust-age-metallicity. Lower-mass galaxies displayed a wide range of formation redshifts and quenching timescales, indicating a combination of internal and external mechanisms shaping galaxy evolution. The analysis supports the grow-and-quench framework, showing a continuously populated diversity of quenching timescales.

Summary: This paper describes the collection, processing, and analysis of new imaging data in the COSMOS field to produce a new reference photometric redshift catalog. The photometric methodologies and redshift codes used are shown to have high precision and self-consistency. The results have important implications for future surveys and the study of the COSMOS field.

Toward a Better Understanding of Cosmic Chronometers: Stellar Population Properties of Passive Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift

Nicola Borghi et al.

Summary: Using publicly available data, the stellar population properties of 140 massive and passive galaxies are measured. A new diagnostic based on pseudo-Lick indices is developed and used in combination with photometric and spectroscopic criteria to select a reliable sample of passively evolving galaxies. The ages, metallicities, and element abundances of the galaxies are constrained using optimized Lick indices, and their relationships with stellar velocity dispersion are analyzed. The results confirm the existence of mass-downsizing evolution.

The Stellar Metallicities of Massive Quiescent Galaxies at 1.0 < z < 1.3 from KMOS plus VANDELS

Adam C. Carnall et al.

Summary: We present the stacked spectrum of massive quiescent galaxies at 1.0 < z < 1.3, showing a decrease in metallicity and iron abundance compared to the local universe. The average alpha enhancement of galaxies with similar mass has not evolved over the past 8 billion years, suggesting that high alpha enhancements in recent bright quiescent galaxies are due to their extreme masses. Our findings are consistent with recent studies and provide independent verification of formation redshifts.

Toward a Better Understanding of Cosmic Chronometers: A New Measurement of H(z) at z ∼ 0.7

Nicola Borghi et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the stellar ages of 140 massive and passive galaxies and provides a new direct measurement of H(z) using the cosmic chronometer approach. The study also proposes a simple framework to describe the age-redshift relations and derives constraints on H(0) and typical galaxy formation time. This new H(z) measurement paves the road for future joint study of individual passive galaxies and the expansion history of the universe.

Unveiling the Universe with emerging cosmological probes

Michele Moresco et al.

Summary: The discovery of accelerated expansion in the Universe is a major breakthrough in modern cosmology. Different cosmological probes have been studied to understand this acceleration and constraints have been achieved, but tensions between measurements from different methods have surfaced recently. It is crucial to expand the selection of cosmological probes to validate results and increase accuracy.

Elemental Abundances and Ages of z ∼ 0.7 Quiescent Galaxies on the Mass-Size Plane: Implication for Chemical Enrichment and Star Formation Quenching

Aliza G. Beverage et al.

Summary: The study reveals that metallicity in massive quiescent galaxies does not vary with stellar mass, but is correlated with the ratio of stellar mass to size. It suggests that, at fixed mass, compact quiescent galaxies tend to be more metal-rich, and larger mass galaxies formed stars earlier in their history. Additionally, there is a clear trend towards older quiescent galaxies having lower metallicities at higher redshifts.
