A Rapid Ionization Change in the Nebular-phase Spectra of the Type Ia SN 2011fe

M. A. Tucker et al.

Summary: We present three new spectra of nearby Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2011fe and find a rapid ionization shift at approximately 500 days after explosion. The Fe iii emission lines at approximately 4600 angstroms are replaced with Fe i+Fe ii blends at around 4400 and 5400 angstroms. The feature at approximately 7300 angstroms, which is produced by [Fe ii]+[Ni ii], is replaced by broad symmetric [Ca ii] emission. The observed ionization transition occurs approximately 100 days later than predicted by models, indicating clumping in the ejecta. Additionally, the analysis of nebular-phase spectra supports certain progenitor scenarios and excludes others.

Nebular-phase spectra of Type Ia supernovae from the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Supernova Project

M. L. Graham et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of seven nearby SNe Ia and evaluates the contributions of various explosion models, progenitor stars, and binary companions using observations at different time points. The results show consistency with spherically symmetric models for SN Ia explosions and scenarios where the binary companion is another degenerate star. For transitional SNe Ia, there is currently limited observational data available.

Modelling the ionization state of Type Ia supernovae in the nebular phase

Luke J. Shingles et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of non-thermal ionization on supernova spectra and proposes a method to determine collisional excitation conditions independently from the ionization state. The research also suggests that a simple work function approximation provides closer agreement with observations, and changes to the treatment of non-thermal energy deposition can improve the consistency between theoretical models and observations.

Constraining the Progenitor System of the Type Ia Supernova 2021aefx

Griffin Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: We present high-cadence optical and ultraviolet light curves of the normal Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021aefx, which shows an early bump during the first two days of observation. This bump may be a signature of interaction between the exploding white dwarf and a nondegenerate binary companion, but no current model can explain all of our observations.

A Speed Bump: SN 2021aefx Shows that Doppler Shift Alone Can Explain Early Excess Blue Flux in Some Type Ia Supernovae

C. Ashall et al.

Summary: We present early-time observations of the Type Ia supernova 2021aefx, showing an excess flux in the u-band light curve. We suggest that this excess flux may be due to a rapid change in spectral velocity, caused by the emission of Ca ii H&K feature passing through different bands. This effect could be dominant for SNe Ia with broad absorption features and high early-time velocities.

The Rapid Rotation of the Strongly Magnetic Ultramassive White Dwarf EGGR 156

Kurtis A. Williams et al.

Summary: The distribution of white dwarf rotation periods is important for understanding angular momentum evolution and the remnants of double degenerate mergers. We discovered rapid rotation in the strongly magnetic white dwarf EGGR 156 based on its photometric variability, suggesting it is a remnant of a double degenerate merger. The rate of period change in rapidly-rotating, massive, magnetic white dwarfs can be detectable and may help constrain their structure and evolution.

The whisper of a whimper of a bang: 2400 d of the Type Ia SN 2011fe reveals the decay of 55Fe

M. A. Tucker et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the late-time luminosity of the Ia supernova 2011fe, up to approximately 2400 days after maximum light, is powered by energy input from both Co-57 and Fe-55. This marks the first detection of Fe-55 in an Ia supernova. Isotopic abundance provides direct constraints on the burning conditions experienced by the white dwarf, leading to limitations on two classes of explosion models.

Physics of Thermonuclear Explosions: Magnetic Field Effects on Deflagration Fronts and Observable Consequences

Boyan Hristov et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of magnetic field strength and morphology on Type Ia supernovae and their late-time light curves and spectra is investigated. It is found that the topology of the magnetic field is determined by the burning process, independent of initial strength, during the early deflagration phase. Late-time spectra show the imprint of both magnetic field strength and morphology, with inferred magnetic field strengths having a lower limit of 10^6 G.

Measuring an Off-center Detonation through Infrared Line Profiles: The Peculiar Type Ia Supernova SN 2020qxp/ASASSN-20jq

P. Hoeflich et al.

Summary: In this study, a near-infrared spectrum of the underluminous Type Ia supernova SN 2020qxp/ASASSN-20jq obtained with NIRES at the Keck Observatory is presented and analyzed. The analysis reveals good agreement between observed lines and synthetic profiles, allowing for the unraveling of the progenitor's envelope structure and determination of important properties of the white dwarf. The findings shed light on the asymmetric distribution of ejecta and strong overlap of Ca and Ni-56 in low-luminosity, high-density white dwarf supernova Ia progenitors.

PHANGS-ALMA: Arcsecond CO(2-1) Imaging of Nearby Star-forming Galaxies

Adam K. Leroy et al.

Summary: PHANGS-ALMA is the first survey to map CO J = 2 -> 1 line emission at 1'' similar to 100 pc resolution from a sample of 90 nearby galaxies (d less than or similar to 20 Mpc) that lie on or near the z = 0 main sequence of star-forming galaxies. The data from PHANGS-ALMA can be used to measure the demographics, life cycle, and physical state of molecular clouds across the galaxy population where most stars form at z = 0.

Summary: PHANGS-HST is a UV-optical imaging survey of 38 spiral galaxies near 20 Mpc, providing insights into the connections between young stars, HII regions, and cold molecular gas in nearby star-forming galaxies. Accurate distances are crucial for transforming observables into physical parameters. This paper presents TRGB distances for 10 galaxies, including four first published measurements and seven best available distances.
