Rotation Periods, Inclinations, and Obliquities of Cool Stars Hosting Directly Imaged Substellar Companions: Spin-Orbit Misalignments Are Common

Brendan P. Bowler et al.

Summary: The orientation between a star's spin axis and a planet's orbital plane provides valuable information about the system's formation and dynamical history. For non-transiting planets at wide separations, true stellar obliquities are challenging to measure, but lower limits on spin-orbit orientations can be determined from the difference between the inclination of the star's rotational axis and the companion's orbital plane (?i). We present results of a uniform analysis of rotation periods, stellar inclinations, and obliquities of cool stars (SpT ? F5) hosting directly imaged planets and brown dwarf companions.

Direct imaging discovery of a super-Jovian around the young Sun-like star AF Leporis☆

Robert J. J. De Rosa et al.

Summary: Expanding the sample of directly imaged companions to nearby, young stars is crucial for the development and validation of theories regarding their evolution and atmospheric processes. The Gaia astrometric catalog allows for efficient searches by targeting stars that exhibit astrometric reflex motion. AF Leporis was targeted and the companion AF Lep b was detected, adding to the growing number of substellar companions imaged around young stars.

AF Lep b: The lowest-mass planet detected by coupling astrometric and direct imaging data

D. Mesa et al.

Summary: In this study, we used direct-imaging technique to search for low-mass companions around the star AF Lep, and found a faint companion at a separation of about 0.335" from the star with a mass estimated to be 2-5 M-Jup. This is the first companion well below the deuterium burning limit discovered by combining direct imaging with proper-motion anomaly measurements.

The Impact of Bayesian Hyperpriors on the Population-level Eccentricity Distribution of Imaged Planets

Vighnesh Nagpal et al.

Summary: We study the impact of hyperpriors on the population-level eccentricity distributions of directly imaged substellar companions and find that the choice of hyperprior significantly affects the inferred eccentricity distribution. We reanalyze the observational sample of imaged giant planets and find that the eccentricity distribution is consistent with that of close-in exoplanets detected using radial velocities. Our analysis supports the conclusion that long-period giant planets and brown dwarfs have different eccentricity distributions and this conclusion is robust to the choice of hyperprior.

Direct discovery of the inner exoplanet in the HD206893 system Evidence for deuterium burning in a planetary-mass companion

S. Hinkley et al.

Summary: Using data from HARPS spectrograph and Gaia host star astrometry, researchers have discovered a companion HD206893c with an orbital separation of 3.53 au. The study also provides a dynamical mass estimation and age for the system. This discovery shows the potential of using Gaia astrometry for direct imaging and characterization of exoplanets.

Dynamical Mass of the Young Substellar Companion HD 984 B

Kyle Franson et al.

Summary: Model-independent masses of substellar companions play a crucial role in validating models of planet and brown dwarf cooling, testing their input physics, and determining the formation and evolution of these objects. In this study, the dynamical mass and orbit of the young substellar companion HD 984 B were measured, placing it firmly in the brown dwarf regime and revealing a higher eccentricity compared to previous orbit fits.

Summary: The multiplicity survey is significantly improved by using a combination of the PMa, CPM, and RUWE indicators, which enhances the exhaustivity of companion detection and improves accuracy. The detection of CPM companions for bright stars provides a useful proxy for estimating their distance with higher accuracy than the HIPPARCOS method.

Summary: We have used debris discs to infer the properties of planets in 178 planetary systems. Summary: This study explores the potential connection between protoplanetary disk rings, planets, and debris disks through new calculations, which suggest that solid rings with high initial masses and modest planetesimal formation efficiencies may evolve into known cold debris disks. These findings support the possibility that large protoplanetary disk rings evolve into cold debris disks.

Summary: The lifetime of protoplanetary disks is a crucial parameter for planet formation research. Previous studies have suggested that these disks have a short lifetime, but this research reveals that it is more applicable to high-mass stars than low-mass stars. The effect of limiting magnitude is minimized in nearby star clusters.

A ∼75 per cent occurrence rate of debris discs around F stars in the β Pic moving group

Nicole Pawellek et al.

Summary: This paper examines the population of F stars in the 23 Myr-old beta Pictoris moving group (BPMG) and finds that 9/12 targets in the group possess debris discs. Comparing the results with other moving groups and field stars, it is revealed that young moving groups have a comparable or higher incidence rate of debris discs and tend to have smaller discs compared to field stars. The study also suggests that the depletion of debris discs in young populations may be attributed to embedded planets and different birth environments.

Benjamin J. Fulton et al.

Summary: Using high-precision radial velocity measurements of FGKM stars, we found that giant planets are more prevalent at orbital distances of 1-10 au and exhibit a decrease in occurrence at larger orbital distances. Additionally, we observed an increase in occurrence of sub-Jovian planets at orbits of 1-10 au, indicating similar formation or migration mechanisms with their Jovian counterparts. Our measurements of cold gas giant occurrence align with recent results from direct imaging surveys and gravitational lensing surveys, supporting previous findings that giant planet occurrence correlates with stellar mass and metallicity.
