Stellar populations with MEGARA: The inner regions of NGC 7025

M. Chamorro-Cazorla et al.

Summary: This paper examines the capabilities of the MEGARA spectrograph at GTC for studying stellar populations using commissioning data of NGC 7025. Results of the analysis show super solar metallicity and old ages for the bulge stars in NGC 7025 while also indicating a slight negative mass-weighted age gradient. Additionally, a peak in star formation history was found 3.5-4.5 Gyr ago.

From Naked Spheroids to Disky Galaxies: How Do Massive Disk Galaxies Shape Their Morphology?

Luca Costantin et al.

Summary: The majority of massive galaxies are found to build inside-out, with bulges growing more rapidly than disks; older bulges and disks are more massive and compact than younger structures; bulges display a bimodal distribution of mass-weighted ages, forming in two waves.

Ultraviolet to far infrared self-consistent analysis of the stellar populations of massive starburst galaxies at intermediate redshifts

Nestor Espino-Briones et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the properties of the stellar populations of 111 massive dusty starburst galaxies at 0.7 < z < 1.2. We find that these galaxies exhibit a recent star formation episode superimposed on a more evolved stellar population. The duration of the starburst phase is estimated to be around 160 million years, with the added stellar mass accounting for approximately 40% of the median stellar mass in the sample.

Accreted or Not Accreted? The Fraction of Accreted Mass in Galaxies from the Magneticum Simulations and Observations

Rhea-Silvia Remus et al.

Summary: In the two-phase scenario of galaxy formation, a galaxy's stellar mass growth is first dominated by in-situ star formation, and subsequently by accretion. We find that higher-mass galaxies have larger accreted fractions, but predict generally higher accretion fractions for low-mass galaxies. Based on the 3D radial distribution of the accreted and in-situ components, we define six galaxy classes and measure the transition radii. These classes are strongly correlated with the galaxy merger histories.

BUDDI-MaNGA I: A statistical sample of cleanly decomposed bulge and disc spectra

Evelyn J. Johnston et al.

Summary: Studying the components of galaxies is crucial for understanding their evolution. The BUDDI-MaNGA project aims to explore the evolution and morphological transformations of galaxies through the star-formation histories of their bulges and discs. This project provides the largest sample of clean bulge and disc spectra extracted from IFU datacubes, which will contribute to answering questions about galaxy formation and evolution.

3D elemental abundances of stars at formation across the histories of Milky Way-mass galaxies in the FIRE simulations

Matthew A. Bellardini et al.

Summary: In this study, we characterize the 3D spatial variations of [Fe/H], [Mg/H], and [Mg/Fe] in stars at the time of their formation in simulated Milky Way and M31-mass galaxies, providing crucial information for chemical tagging. We find that the scatter in [Fe/H] within a galaxy decreases with time, while the negative radial gradient steepens over time. The strength of azimuthal variation is almost independent of radius and decreases over time. Additionally, all stars formed in a vertically homogeneous disc.

The Number Densities and Stellar Populations of Massive Galaxies at 3 < z < 6: A Diverse, Rapidly Forming Population in the Early Universe

Z. Cemile Marsan et al.

Summary: This study presents a census of massive galaxies at 3 < z < 6 identified in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA Ultra-Deep field stripes. The population at 3 < z < 4 consists of post-starburst, UV-star-forming, and dusty star-forming galaxies in roughly equal fractions, while UV-star-forming galaxies dominate at 4 < z < 6. Various biases in the spectral energy distribution modeling are accounted for, and the treatment of emission line contamination is found to be essential for understanding the number densities and mass growth histories of these galaxies.

The stellar halos of ETGs in the IllustrisTNG simulations

C. Pulsoni et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the rotational support and intrinsic shapes of stellar halos in early-type galaxies are influenced by their accretion and merger histories, as well as the stellar mass. Low-mass galaxies are mainly driven by in-situ stars in shaping their halos, while high-mass galaxies and events with high f(exsitu) values affect the rotation velocity and shape.

The origin of bulges and discs in the CALIFA survey - I. Morphological evolution

J. Mendez-Abreu et al.

Summary: The study reveals differences in the mass-size relation between bulges and discs in high-mass galaxies, as well as a correlation between the Sersic index of bulges and both galaxy and bulge mass. The results support an inside-out formation of nearby non-barred galaxies and suggest that early properties of bulges influence the future evolution of the galaxy.

A Duality in the Origin of Bulges and Spheroidal Galaxies

Luca Costantin et al.

Summary: The study reveals a bimodal distribution of bulge formation, with one wave forming in the early universe at redshift z = 6.2 and another wave dominating at redshift z = 1.3. The first-wave bulges are more compact than the second-wave bulges, and pure spheroids are coetaneous with the second-wave bulges.
