An Algorithm to Calibrate and Correct the Response to Unpolarized Radiation of the X-Ray Polarimeter Onboard IXPE

John Rankin et al.

Summary: This paper describes the calibration and correction of the response of the Gas Pixel Detector (GPD) to unpolarized radiation, and its application to observations of celestial sources. The correction approach is tested against laboratory sources and simulations, and it successfully retrieves the polarization up to the statistical limits of the planned IXPE observations.

A Weighted Analysis to Improve the X-Ray Polarization Sensitivity of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer

Alessandro Di Marco et al.

Summary: Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a Small Explorer mission that measures the polarization of X-ray emission from astronomical sources. It uses Gas Pixel Detector as its focal-plane detectors to image the photoelectron tracks and reconstruct their directions. This paper compares several properties of the tracks and identifies the best one to weight each track for improved reconstruction accuracy.

The Forward and Reverse Shock Dynamics of Cassiopeia A

Jacco Vink et al.

Summary: We report proper motion measurements of the forward- and reverse shock regions of supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A), revealing the deceleration/acceleration of the forward shock and the outward/inward motion of the reverse shock. The findings support the presence of X-ray synchrotron emitting filaments and propose two scenarios explaining the backward motion of the reverse shock.

Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer: prelaunch

Martin C. Weisskopf et al.

Summary: The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a collaborative mission between NASA and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) that aims to investigate imaging X-ray polarimetry. It features three identical telescopes with polarization-sensitive imaging X-ray detectors, and will conduct precise polarimetry for a 2-year baseline mission.

X-Ray Polarization Detection of Cassiopeia A with IXPE

Jacco Vink et al.

Summary: Polarized 3-6 keV X-ray emission from the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) has been detected with a significance of similar to 5 sigma using IXPE. The measurements indicate an overall polarization degree of 1.8% +/- 0.3%, with an average polarization degree of similar to 2.5% for the synchrotron component and close to 5% for the X-ray synchrotron-dominated forward shock region.

The Instrument of the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer

Paolo Soffitta et al.

Summary: While X-ray spectroscopy, timing, and imaging have improved significantly over the years, progress in X-ray polarimetry has been limited due to the lack of sensitive detection equipment and the lower-than-expected polarization of celestial X-ray sources.

Toward Optimal Signal Extraction for Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry

A. L. Peirson et al.

Summary: In this study, an optimal signal extraction process for imaging X-ray polarimetry was described using an ensemble of deep neural networks. The trained neural networks were able to select against certain events and measure event angles and errors for desired gas-conversion tracks, resulting in an improved signal-to-noise ratio for recovered polarization. The new technique showed sensitivity improvements over previous weighting schemes and eliminated the need to adjust weighting for the source spectrum.

A study of background for IXPE

F. Xie et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the expected background of IXPE and its impact on point and extended X-ray sources. Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate the background in the IXPE orbital environment, along with different background rejection techniques. The estimated background is about 2.9 times larger than the requirement, indicating the need for background subtraction when observing extended sources like supernova remnants.

Efficiencies of Magnetic Field Amplification and Electron Acceleration in Young Supernova Remnants: Global Averages and Kepler's Supernova Remnant

Stephen P. Reynolds et al.

Summary: Research has shown that various factors influence particle acceleration and magnetic field amplification in different supernova remnants, resulting in significant variations in the values of the epsilon parameters at different locations and environments. Unknown factors such as shock obliquity and upstream neutral fraction may impact the efficiency of these processes.
