Small-scale solar jet formation and their associated waves and instabilities

Samuel Skirvin et al.

Summary: Studies on small-scale jets in the solar lower atmosphere have made significant progress thanks to detailed observations and mathematical modelling. This review provides an overview of jet formation and evolution from observational, numerical, and theoretical perspectives. It discusses jet properties, instabilities, and mechanisms related to energy transport. Gaps between observational and theoretical studies are identified, and it is expected that advancements in observational instruments and further theoretical developments will help to close these gaps.

Cutoff of transverse waves through the solar transition region

Gabriel Pelouze et al.

Summary: Transverse oscillations of kink waves are found to experience a cutoff in the transition region, preventing them from reaching the corona. However, waves with shorter periods can still propagate to the corona with little attenuation, resulting in heating.

The dynamics and observability of circularly polarized kink waves⋆

N. Magyar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of circularly polarized kink waves on straight plasma cylinders and compares them to linearly polarized kink waves. The research finds that the damping caused by resonant absorption is independent of the polarization state, although the morphology of the induced resonant flow differs for the two polarizations. There are no significant differences in the forward-modeled Doppler signals. Additionally, the growth rate of small scales in nonlinear oscillations is determined by the total energy of the oscillation, rather than the perturbation amplitude.

3D MHD wave propagation near a coronal null point: New wave mode decomposition approach

N. Yadav et al.

Summary: Researchers have proposed a new MHD wave decomposition method that overcomes the limitations of existing methods, allowing for the study of energy fluxes associated with different MHD modes in the solar atmosphere. By simulating wave dynamics, they demonstrate that MHD waves excited by ubiquitous vortex flows significantly contribute to the Poynting flux in the solar corona.

II. The effect of axisymmetric and spatially varying equilibria and flow on MHD wave modes: cylindrical geometry

S. J. Skirvin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of magnetohydrodynamic waves under non-uniform equilibria and examines the effects of non-uniform plasma density and flow on different wave modes. The results show that increasing equilibrium non-uniformity affects the spatial eigenfunctions and introduces additional nodes, while also increasing azimuthal perturbations and creating vortical motions.

The Propagation of Coherent Waves Across Multiple Solar Magnetic Pores

S. D. T. Grant et al.

Summary: Solar pores act as efficient magnetic conduits to propagate magnetohydrodynamic wave energy into the outer solar atmosphere. Wave activity within different regions of the solar atmosphere, from photosphere to chromosphere, showed complex patterns and behavior, with wave coherence diminishing as they propagate into the chromosphere. Despite introducing equivalent wave modes into similar pores in the photosphere, vast differences in wave morphology at chromospheric layers were observed.

The effect of the magnetic field on the damping of slow waves in the solar corona

T. J. Duckenfield et al.

Summary: Slow magnetoacoustic waves in astrophysical plasma systems, such as the solar corona, are often observed to damp rapidly due to heating and cooling processes causing misbalance. The inclusion of thermal misbalance in our understanding of slow mode damping can help resolve discrepancies between observations and theories relying solely on compressive viscosity and thermal conduction. Additionally, the damping times of slow waves from thermal misbalance in the solar corona are found to be of the order of 10-100 min.

Acoustic Wave Properties in Footpoints of Coronal Loops in 3D MHD Simulations

Julia M. Riedl et al.

Summary: Acoustic waves excited in the photosphere and below can play a crucial role in heating the solar chromosphere and corona. Through 3D numerical MHD simulations, it was found that only about 2% of the initial energy from the driver actually reaches the corona, with dynamic behavior observed in the shape of cutoff regions and the height of the transition region. Standing waves, oscillations in the transition region height, and conversions between different types of waves were also observed in the study.

Possible Signature of Sausage Waves in Photospheric Bright Points

Yuhang Gao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed four isolated bright points and found that their area and average intensity oscillate in-phase for several cycles, with oscillation periods ranging from 100 to 200 seconds. The phase relation was interpreted as a signature of sausage waves, particularly slow waves, after discussing sausage-wave theory and the opacity effect.

Resonances in a Coronal Loop Driven by Torsional Alfven Waves Propagating from the Photosphere

Roberto Soler et al.

Summary: The study shows that torsional Alfven waves driven in the photosphere can efficiently transmit energy to the coronal magnetic loop, with cavity resonances heavily affecting wave transmission. However, dissipation in the coronal plasma is weak, converting only a small percentage of energy into heat, which is insufficient to compensate for radiative losses. Most of the energy leaks back to the chromosphere, while dissipation is much more efficient in the lower atmosphere where wave heating can balance a significant fraction of radiation.

Magnetohydrodynamic Waves in Open Coronal Structures

D. Banerjee et al.

Summary: Modern observatories have revealed the ubiquitous presence of magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar corona, which are usually originated in the lower solar atmosphere and play a crucial role in coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Advanced telescopes have enabled us to extract important coronal properties through MHD seismology and study the detection, origin, and damping of these waves in open coronal structures. The review article also touches upon the possible role of Alfvenic waves in the acceleration of solar wind.

Plumelets: Dynamic Filamentary Structures in Solar Coronal Plumes

V. M. Uritsky et al.

Summary: Recent high-resolution observations have revealed the presence of numerous time-evolving filamentary substructures, referred to as plumelets, within solar coronal plumes. These plumelets, which account for most of the plume emission, support periodic disturbances with phase speeds of 190-260 km s(-1) and longitudinal wavelengths of 55-65 Mm. The oscillations in neighboring plumelets are uncorrelated, suggesting that waves could be driven by p-mode flows at spatial scales smaller than the plumelet separation.
