How Ram Pressure Drives Radial Gas Motions in the Surviving Disk

Nina Akerman et al.

Summary: The evolution of galaxies can be greatly influenced by their environment, particularly in dense galaxy clusters. Recent observations have shown that massive galaxies experiencing strong ram-pressure stripping (RPS) exhibit an increased frequency of nuclear activity. This study uses hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the impact of RPS on gas inflow in a massive disk galaxy. The results indicate that RPS enhances the inflow of gas towards the galaxy center, irrespective of the wind impact angle. Increased torque on the inner disk gas, caused by local pressure gradients in the presence of an edge-on component of the intracluster medium wind, drives this increase. The study also compares different models for black hole accretion and highlights the need for an estimator that considers the missing physics to accurately capture BH accretion in RPS galaxies.

Revisiting the role of bars in AGN fuelling with propensity score sample matching

Luiz A. Silva-Lima et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between barred galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) using a sample from SDSS. The results show that AGN are more commonly found in barred galaxies with higher accretion rates. However, there is no correlation between activity level and bar strength. These findings support theoretical predictions and suggest the presence of other mechanisms at smaller scales.

GASP XXXVII: The Most Extreme Jellyfish Galaxies Compared with Other Disk Galaxies in Clusters, an H i Study

N. Luber et al.

Summary: This article presents the results of a Very Large Array H i imaging survey, aiming to understand the formation of long H alpha tails in some galaxies, known as extreme jellyfish galaxies. The study focuses on five extreme jellyfish galaxies, which were optically selected from previous surveys and confirmed to have long H alpha tails through MUSE observations. The findings suggest that these extreme jellyfish galaxies have higher stellar mass and velocity compared to other disk galaxies, and are located closer to the center of the cluster. It is concluded that the high stellar mass allows these galaxies to fall deeper into the cluster before being stripped, and the pressure from the surrounding interstellar medium (ICM) contributes to the formation of their spectacular star-forming tails.

A study of the Hydra I galaxy cluster shows conclusive evidence for ram pressure stripping in certain galaxies, with compressed H I contours, well-defined H I tails, and ongoing star formation in the stripped gas. The high surviving H I content suggests that the galaxies may be protected from the harshest effects of ram pressure.

GASP XXXIX: MeerKAT hunts Jellyfish in A2626

Tirna Deb et al.

Summary: This paper presents MeerKAT H i observations of six jellyfish candidate galaxies in the A2626 galaxy cluster. Two of the galaxies were confirmed as jellyfish galaxies, while the others were identified as non-jellyfish galaxies. The jellyfish galaxies have low H i content, are located in the cluster core, and move at high velocities. The non-jellyfish galaxies have rich H i content with morphological features indicating warps, asymmetries, and possible tidal interactions. The study also reveals that ram-pressure stripping and H i-to-H-2 conversion are significant depletion channels for atomic gas in the galaxies.

Morphology Driven Evolution of Barred Galaxies in OMEGAWINGS Clusters

Amira A. Tawfeek et al.

Summary: This study examines barred galaxies in the cluster environment using a sample of galaxies from the OmegaWINGS survey. The results show a strong correlation between the fraction of barred galaxies and stellar mass and morphological type, with the highest fraction found in massive late-type galaxies. The presence of a bar in a cluster environment is determined by the morphological transformation of the galaxy, independent of cluster mass and clustercentric distance. Tidal forces from close companion galaxies can suppress or destroy the formation of bars. The barred galaxies in the sample are either early-type, star-forming galaxies within the clusters or late-type quenched galaxies located beyond the clusters' boundaries. We propose a scenario where quenched barred galaxies that enter clusters are rejuvenated by the interaction between perturbed gas and the bar during morphological transformation.
