Accretion geometry of the neutron star low mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2 from X-ray polarization measurements

R. Farinelli et al.

Summary: We present the spectro-polarimetric results of the Cyg X-2 neutron star low-mass X-ray binary observed by IXPE, NICER, and INTEGRAL simultaneously. The broadband spectrum consists of a lower-energy component from the accretion disc and Comptonized emission from a thermal plasma. The polarization measurements in the 2-8 keV band show consistency with previous observations and suggest a spreading layer at the neutron star surface as the main source of the polarization signal.

Handling the Background in IXPE Polarimetric Data

Alessandro Di Marco et al.

Summary: Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a Small Explorer mission launched by NASA and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana on December 9, 2021. It is dedicated to investigating X-ray polarimetry in the 2-8 keV energy band, allowing angular-, time-, and energy-resolved observations. IXPE consists of three telescopes with grazing-incidence mirrors and gas pixel detectors. This paper presents a guideline for optimal background selection and rejection strategy to improve polarimetric sensitivity based on IXPE observations, with a case study on the 4U 0142+61 magnetar.

Flux-resolved Spectropolarimetric Evolution of the X-Ray Pulsar Hercules X-1 Using IXPE

Akash Garg et al.

Summary: We conducted a spectropolarimetric study of the accreting X-ray pulsar Hercules X-1 using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Our observations revealed a significant increase in the polarization fraction from similar to 7% to 9% in the Main-on state and to similar to 15%-19% in the Short-on state, while the polarization angle remained relatively constant or slightly changed, around 47 degrees-59 degrees, in all three epochs. The polarization properties were found to be independent of energy. We suggest that the increase in polarization fraction during the Short-on state can be attributed to the preferential obstruction of one of the magnetic poles of the neutron star when it is partially blocked by the disk warp.

Spectro-polarimetric view of bright atoll source GX 9+9 using IXPE and AstroSat

Rwitika Chatterjee et al.

Summary: We have conducted the first spectro-polarimetric study of the bright NS-LMXB GX 9+9 using IXPE and AstroSat observations. We found a significant detection of polarization of 1.7 +/- 0.4% over the 2-8 keV energy band, with a polarization angle of 63 degrees +/- 7 degrees. The polarization is energy-dependent, with null polarization in 2-4 keV and 3.2% polarization in 4-8 keV.

The 2019 outburst of AMXP SAX J1808.4-3658 and radio follow up of MAXI J0911-655 and XTE J1701-462

K. V. S. Gasealahwe et al.

Summary: We present radio coverage of the 2019 outburst of the AMXP SAX J1808.4-3658 using MeerKAT and compare it with X-ray and optical measurements. We investigate the relationship between accretion and jet formation in this system and find that the jet strengthens during the reflaring activity following the main outburst peak. We also provide new insights into the correlation between radio and X-ray measurements for this source.

Summary: While X-ray spectroscopy, timing, and imaging have improved significantly over the years, progress in X-ray polarimetry has been limited due to the lack of sensitive detection equipment and the lower-than-expected polarization of celestial X-ray sources.
