An Ice Age JWST inventory of dense molecular cloud ices

M. K. McClure et al.

Summary: Icy grain mantles in interstellar clouds are important reservoirs of volatile elements that connect chemical processes with planet formation and atmospheric composition. Results from the Ice Age program using the James Webb Space Telescope reveal the rich composition of these dense cloud ices, showing the detection of weak ice features and complex organic molecules. The study suggests that simple and complex molecules can form early in ice-rich environments and JWST can trace the molecules seen in planetary atmospheres back to their origins in interstellar clouds.

IRFEL Selective Irradiation of Amorphous Solid Water: from Dangling to Bulk Modes

Stephane Coussan et al.

Summary: Amorphous solid water is one of the most widely studied solid phase systems, and understanding the nature of inter- and intramolecular forces in ASW is crucial for interpreting its catalytic role in environments. Experiments with mid-infrared radiation demonstrated the selective effects of vibrational energy injection on both the surface and bulk of pASW.

Spin-Forbidden Carbon-Carbon Bond Formation in Vibrationally Excited α-CO

Jessalyn A. DeVine et al.

Summary: This study investigates the vibrational excitation of CO and its reaction mechanism, leading to the production of CO2 and C3O2. The results reveal that the lowest-energy pathway involves a spin-forbidden reaction of (CO)2 yielding C(3P) and CO2, followed by barrierless recombination of C(3P) with two other CO molecules forming C3O2. The calculated spin-flipping time scales and efficiency support the spin-forbidden mechanism. This discovery has implications for accurate modeling of interstellar chemistry.

Summary: Interstellar and cometary ices, mainly composed of amorphous solid water (ASW), are crucial in the formation of planetary systems around young stars. This study presents experimental and molecular dynamics simulation results on the effects of FEL irradiation on hydrogen bonding in ASW and the transfer of vibrational energy.

First Experimental Confirmation of the CH3O + H2CO → CH3OH + HCO Reaction: Expanding the CH3OH Formation Mechanism in Interstellar Ices

Julia C. Santos et al.

Summary: Research shows that the formation of methanol in interstellar ices is an important pathway through the CH3O-induced abstraction reaction, rather than just the gradual addition of H atoms to CO. Experimental results and analytical techniques support this theory, while the isotope effect hinders the progress of another reaction pathway to some extent.

Spectroscopic measurements of CH3OH in layered and mixed interstellar ice analogues

B. Mueller et al.

Summary: The molecular composition of interstellar ice mantles is influenced by gas-grain processes in molecular clouds, with methanol being detected towards denser pre-stellar cores and star-forming regions. Research on the structure of mixed and layered ice growth suggests that observations of methanol ice features in space can provide valuable insights into the structure of interstellar ices in various environments. This study expects the James Webb Space Telescope to provide more information on the layered or mixed nature of ices in different interstellar environments.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Energy Dissipation on Amorphous Solid Water: Testing the Validity of Equipartition

Adrien Fredon et al.

Summary: A variety of molecular species have been observed in the interstellar medium, ranging from simple diatomic species to complex organic molecules. The formation of these molecules, especially those with several carbon atoms, is believed to mainly occur on the surface of interstellar dust grains. Surface reactions under low interstellar temperatures are exothermic, and this exothermicity can aid in the desorption of reaction products. The study focused on energy dissipation upon translational, vibrational, or rotational excitation of admolecules on a surface, highlighting the importance of surface-admolecule bond excitation for energy dissipation to the surface.
