Small vessel disease burden and intracerebral haemorrhage in patients taking oral anticoagulants

David J. Seiffge et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of small vessel disease (SVD) on anticoagulant-associated intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH). It found that medium-to-high severity SVD is associated with ICH in patients on anticoagulants and independently predicts ICH in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) taking anticoagulants. The absence of SVD identifies patients at low risk of ICH, indicating that anticoagulation alone may not be the sole cause of ICH.

AF-React study: atrial fibrillation management strategies in clinical practice-retrospective longitudinal study from real-world data in Northern Portugal

Susana Silva Pinto et al.

Summary: The study found an increasing prevalence of atrial fibrillation among adults over 40 in northern Portugal, with evidence of both undertreatment and overtreatment in anticoagulation therapy. A considerable proportion of patients were not anticoagulated despite having an indication, while some patients with no indication were receiving anticoagulants. The AF-React study provides important insights for Portugal and builds on real-world studies in Europe, revealing previously unstudied data.

Trends of global burden of atrial fibrillation/flutter from Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Lina Wang et al.

Summary: The global burden of atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter (AF/AFL) was estimated using data from the Global Health Data Exchange. While the age-standardised rates of prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) decreased from 1990 to 2017, the absolute number of patients with AF/AFL, annual number of new cases, and DALYs lost due to AF/AFL increased. Risk factors such as elevated systolic blood pressure, high body mass index, alcohol use, and smoking contributed significantly to the burden of AF/AFL. More systematic surveillance and management are needed to address this issue.

Predicting 90-day modified Rankin Scale score with discharge information in acute ischaemic stroke patients following treatment

Andrew K. ElHabr et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 280 acute ischaemic stroke patients to predict their 90-day outcomes, finding that discharge modified Rankin Scale score and discharge disposition were significant predictors of long-term outcomes.
