Hypophosphatemia and Outcomes in ICU: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Jeremy Cheuk Kin Sin et al.

Summary: This study found that hypophosphatemia in ICU patients was associated with increased length of hospital stay but not higher mortality rates. Therefore, hypophosphatemia may serve as an indicator of disease severity in critically ill patients.

Hypophosphatemia in critically ill adults and children-A systematic review

Annika Reintam Blaser et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified significant variations in the prevalence of hypophosphatemia among critically ill patients, with its association with adverse outcomes such as prolonged hospital stay, need for respiratory support, and higher mortality. However, there is insufficient evidence regarding the optimal threshold for critical hypophosphatemia, frequency of phosphate measurements, and timing for correcting hypophosphatemia.

The Refeeding Syndrome: a neglected but potentially serious condition for inpatients. A narrative review

Valentina Ponzo et al.

Summary: Refeeding syndrome is a potentially serious condition that occurs in individuals who are rapidly fed after severe undernourishment, leading to abnormal electrolyte and fluid shifts which can cause organ dysfunctions. The lack of a standard definition and the nonspecificity of symptoms make diagnosis and estimation of incidence challenging. A unified definition and severity classification proposed by ASPEN in 2020 aim to raise awareness of the condition for better patient identification and prevention.

Prevalence of hypophosphatemia in the ICU- Results of an international one-day point prevalence survey

M. M. Berger et al.

Summary: This study revealed a prevalence of at least 15.4% of hypophosphatemia in ICU patients, which can occur at any time during the ICU stay. The absence of phosphate repletion protocols in 60% of participating ICUs underscores the need for the development of ICU phosphate protocols and guidelines.
