Effects of the food colorant carmoisine on zebrafish embryos at a wide range of concentrations

Tuba Kiziltan et al.

Summary: Since the middle of the twentieth century, the use of dyes has become more common in various industries. In this study, the effects of carmoisine on the embryonic development of zebrafish were investigated, while examining recommended and overexposure doses. The results showed that carmoisine caused serious malformations, reduction in height and eye diameter, increase in oxidative stress indicators and apoptosis, lipid accumulation, decreased locomotor activity and blood flow rate.

Multi-omic approach to evaluate the response of gilt-head sea bream (Sparus aurata) exposed to the UV filter sulisobenzone

Nieves R. Colas-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Sulisobenzone (BP-4) is a commonly detected UV filter in aquatic ecosystems with suspected endocrine disrupting effects. Exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of BP-4 in gilt-head sea bream resulted in disruption of energy and lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and impacts on enzymes involved in steroid and thyroid hormones biosynthesis. This integrated multiomic approach highlights additional modes of action of BP-4 that may have been overlooked by traditional single omic methods.

Effects of oxybenzone on zebrafish behavior and cognition

Ana Luisa Pires Moreira et al.

Summary: Exposure to oxybenzone in zebrafish has been shown to affect behavior and cognitive functions, including locomotion, anxiety-like behavior, social interactions, and short-term memory. The results indicate reduced locomotion, increased risk-taking behavior, impaired aggressive response, and compromised ability to retain information when exposed to oxybenzone.

Imazalil and its metabolite imazalil-M caused developmental toxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos via cell apoptosis mediated by metabolic disorders

Shiran Huang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the developmental toxicity of the fungicide IMZ and its metabolite IMZ-M on zebrafish embryos and investigated the potential mechanisms. The results showed that IMZ and IMZ-M caused developmental toxicity in zebrafish embryos, leading to decreased heart rate, hatching inhibition, and pericardial cyst. The study also revealed cell apoptosis and metabolic disorder as potential mechanisms of toxicity.

Predicting pesticide dissipation half-life intervals in plants with machine learning models

Yike Shen et al.

Summary: Pesticide dissipation half-life in plants is crucial for assessing environmental fate of pesticides and establishing good agriculture practices. This study utilized machine learning models to predict the dissipation half-life and proposed novel intervals to account for variations in empirical data. The best-performing model, GBRT-ECFP, showed the potential of machine learning in evaluating pesticide fate in agricultural crops.

Development of new QSAR models for water, sediment, and soil half-life

Anna Lombardo et al.

Summary: Checking the persistence of a chemical in the environment is crucial, and regulations like REACH require the measurement or estimation of its half-life in water, sediment, and soil. We have developed three new semi-quantitative models for these environmental compartments and implemented them in open-source tools. These models perform well in training and validation, making them effective for screening and prioritization.

Effects of Nanoplastics and Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane on Early Zebrafish Embryos Identified by Single-Cell RNA Sequencing

Yuxuan Liu et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics and BMDBM have significant effects on the gene expression in zebrafish embryos, with combined exposure reducing adverse effects on gene expression. Single-cell RNA sequencing technology identified neural mid cells as target cells of both pollutants, which commonly altered brain and head development functions.

Benzophenone-3 induced abnormal development of enteric nervous system in zebrafish through MAPK/ERK signaling pathway

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a congenital disease characterized by a deficiency of enteric neurons, with genetic and environmental factors playing a role. Research suggests that the UV filter component BP-3 may inhibit the development of the enteric nervous system (ENS) through modulation of the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway. These findings provide insights into potential mechanisms for HSCR development and suggest therapeutic targets for intervention.

Benzophenone-3 degradation via UV/H2O2 and UV/persulfate reactions

Young-Min Lee et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the UV/PS reaction is more efficient in degrading BP3 in water compared to the UV/H2O2 reaction, with degradation efficiency increasing with higher dosage of H2O2 and persulfate. BP3 degradation primarily occurs at pH 6 and is influenced by water components such as HCO3-, NO3-, Cl-, Br- ions, as well as humic acid.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations and DFT calculations were used to study the structural dynamics and vibrational features of NAG in solution, revealing the interactions between NAG and solvent molecules as well as the preferred conformations of NAG. The results from normal mode analysis showed that the solvent-induced structural fluctuations of NAG could be reflected in the vibrational features of specific chromophores, allowing for the evaluation of molecular structure based on their vibrational signatures.
