Metal-organic framework-derived ZrO2 on N/S-doped porous carbons for mechanistic and kinetic inspection of catalytic H2O2 homolysis

Minsung Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, UiO-66 and its analogues functionalized with -NH2/-SO3H were synthesized to generate ZrO2 poly-crystallites on N/S-doped carbon catalysts via pyrolysis. The catalysts contained different concentrations of Lewis basic N/S dopants, resulting in varying strengths and areas of Bro·nsted acidic -OH and Lewis acidic Zr4+ species. The results showed that adjusting the EBA/SLA ratio can promote the production of ·OH via catalytic H2O2 homolysis.

Structure sensitivity of CuO in CO oxidation over CeO2-CuO/Cu2O catalysts

Zhenhua Zhang et al.

Summary: By studying the CO oxidation catalyzed by CeO2-CuO/Cu2O nanocomposites with different CuO structures, it was found that the CuO-CeO2 interfaces in the CeO2-CuO/c-Cu2O (cubes) nanocomposites exhibit higher intrinsic activity, indicating that the active oxygen species originates from CuO. An active 13.2% CeO2-CuO/c-Cu2O(s) catalyst for CO oxidation was achieved on fine Cu2O cubes, possessing a high density of active sites.

Copper oxide clusters modified by bismuth single atoms to catalyze CO oxidation

Bing Nan et al.

Summary: Supported copper-bismuth oxide catalysts with a unique active site structure were prepared via incipient-wetness impregnation. The Bi-doped catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance in carbon monoxide oxidation, with a reaction rate ten times higher than that of pure copper-silica catalyst. The active site structure, Bi single atom anchored on the surface of CuOx cluster via Bi-O-Cu structure, was determined using advanced characterization techniques. This work provides a new guideline for synthesizing high active atomic-scale catalysts for different redox reactions.

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction-Mediated Amendment of a Manganese Oxide Surface Desired to Selectively Transform Nitrogen Oxides and/or Ammonia

Jongsik Kim et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that supercritical CO2 extraction can adjust the quantities/strengths of surface sites on Mn oxide, improving the selectivities to desired N-2 and promoting SO2 tolerance. The mechanism involves promoting unique NOx reduction pathways to produce N-2 only while detouring undesired byproducts, and tailoring redox sites to deter NH3 oxidation. Additionally, Mn-CO2 showed enhanced long-term stability in reducing NOx over Mn in the presence of SO2 at lower temperatures, providing higher selectivities to desired N-2.

Promotional effects of CuxO on the activity of Cu/ZnO catalyst toward efficient CO oxidation

Bismark Sarkodie et al.

Summary: Tailoring the configuration at metal and support interface can effectively enhance the catalytic performance of Cu/ZnO catalyst for CO oxidation. The incorporation of active Cu+ species in CuxO-Cu/ZnO catalyst significantly reduces the activation energy and improves the oxygen mobility and vacancies, leading to enhanced catalytic activity. The critical role of active Cu+ sites in CuxO-Cu/ZnO was further confirmed by In-situ DRIFTS.

Deciphering Evolution Pathway of Supported NO3• Enabled via Radical Transfer from •OH to Surface NO3- Functionality for Oxidative Degradation of Aqueous Contaminants

Jongsik Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method to radicalize NO3- functionalities on polymorphic α-/γ-MnO2 surfaces, enabling the transformation of NO3• to (OH)-O• and demonstrating the superior efficiency of α-MnO2-N in decomposing organic pollutants in water. The surface NO3- concentration and bi-dentate binding arrays provided by α-MnO2-N enhance the collision frequency between (OH)-O• and NO3- species, facilitating the exothermic transition of NO3- functionalities to surface NO3• analogues. These findings suggest that supported NO3• species are 5-7 times more efficient in degrading textile wastewater compared to conventional (OH)-O• radicals and supported SO4•- analogues.

Lattice oxygen self-spillover on reducible oxide supported metal cluster: the water-gas shift reaction on Cu/CeO2 catalyst

Ya-Qiong Su et al.

Summary: This study uncovers the crucial role of reducible oxide supports in metal catalyzed reactions through density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The spillover of oxygen from the oxide support to the metal cluster is identified, leading to a highly active monolayered configuration of the Cu nanocluster. Additionally, the water-gas shift reaction is found to favor the supported copper monolayer over the copper-ceria periphery, highlighting the importance of metal-support interaction in catalytic activity.
