Chemical Disorder in 6H-SiC Irradiated with Both He and Fe Ions Followed by 1500 °C Annealing: Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy Analysis

Guoqiang You et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical disorder in SiC after ion irradiation, revealing the presence of facetted voids in the damaged layer, with lower Si atomic percentage and higher C and O atomic percentages, particularly in inner voids. The energy losses of Si and C edges are also found to shift to lower values in the damaged layer.

Insights into hardening, plastically deformed zone and geometrically necessary dislocations of two ion-irradiated FeCrAl(Zr)-ODS ferritic steels: A combined experimental and simulation study

Peng Song et al.

Summary: FeCrAl(Zr)-ODS ferritic steels were studied to understand their radiation hardening behavior. Irradiation-induced hardening increased with increasing displacement damage, and the addition of Zr reduced the ion-irradiation hardening. The relationship between the plastically deformed zone size and the density of geometrically necessary dislocations was determined.

LiTaO3:Bi3+,Tb3+,Ga3+,Ge4+: A Smart Perovskite with High Charge Carrier Storage Capacity for X-Ray Imaging, Stress Sensing, and Non-Real-Time Recording

Tianshuai Lyu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing X-ray or UV-light charged storage and mechanoluminescence materials with high charge carrier storage capacity, using Bi3+, Tb3+, Ga3+, or Ge4+ doped LiTaO3 perovskite phosphors. The properties of these materials, including photoluminescence, thermoluminescence, and ML, are studied, and the charge trapping and releasing processes are explained using energy level diagrams. The optimized materials show promising results for applications such as X-ray imaging and stress sensing, with a ratio of TL intensity comparable to state-of-the-art materials. Additionally, force-induced charge carrier storage and color-tailorable ML for anti-counterfeiting purposes are also demonstrated.

Effect of heavy ions irradiation on LiTaO3 crystal

Lilong Pang et al.

Summary: In this work, congruent LiTaO3 crystals were irradiated by heavy ions Fe, Xe, and Bi at fluences ranging from 1 x 10(12) to 2 x 10(15) cm(-2). Heavy ion irradiation presents a unique effect in transmission spectra, enhancing transmittance over a broad spectral range. The discrepancy in effects between light ion and heavy ion irradiation may originate from different damage processes, with heavy ions inducing direct amorphization and forming special textures that enhance optical transmissions.

Raman characterization of phonon confinement and strain effects from latent ion tracks in α-quartz

Maria C. Garcia Toro et al.

Summary: This study investigates phonon confinement and strain effects in ion-irradiated and subsequently etched alpha-quartz. It was found that phonon coherence lengths decreased with increasing fluence, indicating ion tracks may confine optical phonons in quartz. Additionally, lattice strain contributions were observed at the highest fluence, with estimated induced stress on the order of 100 MPa.

Synergistic effects assessment between nuclear damage and electronic energy dissipation in LiTaO3 under heavy ion irradiation using optical waveguides properties and the irradiation angle of incidence

V Tormo-Marquez et al.

Summary: High energy heavy ion irradiation in LiTaO3 was conducted to study the synergistic effects between nuclear and electronic energy loss mechanisms in damage generation. Optical waveguides were fabricated in LiTaO3 using F and Si ions, with refractive index profiles used for accurate damage profile determination. In-situ optical reflectance of low energy irradiations was performed to estimate nuclear damage kinetics in buried regions. Varying angle of incidence enhanced damage and confirmed the synergistic mechanism.

Exploring the origins of the indentation size effect at submicron scales

Xiaolong Ma et al.

Summary: Through the use of precession electron beam diffraction microscopy, researchers were able to examine the dislocation characteristics of a single crystal of nickel beneath the surface, revealing the impact of indentation depth on dislocation behavior. The indentation size effect deviates from the Nix-Gao model and is largely controlled by dislocation source starvation, leading to high dislocation mobility and the formation of subgrain boundaries.
