Accelerated anode and cathode reaction due to direct electron uptake and consumption by manganese dioxide and titanium dioxide composite cathode in degradation of iron composite

Summary: Manganese dioxide (MnO2) particles were combined with iron (Fe) to fabricate a new implant, which exhibited enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and cathode performance. The introduction of a cathode with high work function and ORR activity provides novel pathways for accelerating the degradation rate of Fe-based implants.

Microstructure development and biodegradation behavior of additively manufactured Mg-Zn-Gd alloy with LPSO structure

Summary: In this study, porous Mg-Zn-Gd part was fabricated using laser additive manufacturing combined with solution heat treatment. The formation of long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase reduced the micro-galvanic corrosion tendency and achieved uniform degradation with a considerably reduced degradation rate of 0.34 mm/year. In-vitro cell tests further proved its favorable biocompatibility. The additively manufactured Mg-Zn-Gd with LPSO structure showed great potential for orthopedic application.

Enhanced singlet oxygen generation in PCN-224-Zn without the need of electron-hole separation for efficient photocatalytic water disinfection

Summary: An innovative energy-transfer-mediated oxygen activation system has been proposed for selective singlet oxygen generation on PCN-224-Zn, showing remarkable photocatalytic E-coli inactivation and organic pollutant degradation performance. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the introduction of Zn into the metal-organic frameworks, facilitating efficient and selective singlet oxygen generation without the need of electron-hole separation. This work provides a new oxygen activation pathway for efficient and selective ROS generation.

Multiresponsive Ti3C2Tx MXene-Based Actuators Enabled by Dual-Mechanism Synergism for Soft Robotics

Summary: In this study, a mechanically robust and multiresponsive MXene-based actuator with a simple configuration, high mechanical strength, and low-power consumption was developed for soft robotics. The actuator utilizes the hygroexpansion of bacterial cellulose and the thermal expansion of biaxially oriented polypropylene to achieve high actuation performance. Unlike conventional single-mechanism actuators, this actuator provides a favorable architecture for dual-mechanism synergism, resulting in exceptionally reversible actuation performance. Furthermore, the actuator displays excellent long-distance photoresponsive property.

Silver-decorated black phosphorus: a synergistic antibacterial strategy

Summary: By decorating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the surface of black phosphorus (BP), BP@AgNPs nanohybrids were constructed, which exhibited synergistically enhanced photocatalytic antibacterial activity. The nanohybrids displayed broadened visible light absorption and accelerated charge transfer while suppressing electron-hole recombination, resulting in efficient antibacterial performance under light irradiation.

Magnetostrictive bulk Fe-Ga alloys prepared by selective laser melting for biodegradable implant applications

Summary: Selective laser melting (SLM) was used for the first time to manufacture bulk polycrystalline Fe81Ga19 alloys, revealing the influence of different scanning paths on grain orientation and magnetostrictive properties. Zigzag scanning resulted in the best magnetostrictive properties and mechanical strength, indicating the potential of SLM for manufacturing magnetostrictive Fe-Ga alloys.

Photothermal and Photodynamic Effects of g-C3N4 Nanosheet/Bi2S3 Nanorod Composites with Antibacterial Activity for Tracheal Injury Repair

Summary: Photodynamic antimicrobial therapy based on light-responsive nanoparticles has limitations due to the barrier effect of biofilms and bacterial membranes. This study proposes a novel nanocomposite by anchoring Bi2S3 nanorods on zinc-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets, which enhances the photodynamic effect and destroys biofilms effectively. The nanocomposite demonstrates excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and promotes chondrogenic differentiation.

Construction of magnetic nanochains to achieve magnetic energy coupling in scaffold

Summary: In this study, magnetic nanochains were successfully synthesized by magnetic-field-guided interface co-assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The Fe3O4@SiO2 nanochains with unique core-shell structure exhibited orderly assembly of nanoparticles, resulting in magnetic energy coupling and a highly magnetic micro-field. In vitro tests showed that PLLA/Fe3O4@SiO2 scaffolds had superior capacity in enhancing cell activity, improving osteogenesis-related gene expressions, and inducing cell mineralization compared with other scaffolds.

Water-responsive shape memory thermoplastic polyurethane scaffolds triggered at body temperature for bone defect repair

Summary: Combining selective laser sintering (SLS) with water-responsive shape memory polymers provides a promising approach to minimally invasive bone defect repair. In this study, a porous bone scaffold made of biocompatible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with water-responsive shape memory properties was fabricated using SLS. The results showed that water molecules can interact with TPU, affecting the hydrogen bonding and shape fixation. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the shape-recovered scaffold promotes cell adhesion and proliferation.

Summary: In this study, a hydrogel-type shielding material incorporating MXene and poly(acrylic acid) was successfully fabricated through a biomineralization-inspired assembly route. The composite hydrogel exhibits excellent stretchability, recyclability, high shielding performance, and fast self-healing capability, making it suitable for electromagnetic interference shielding in terahertz technologies. The sensitive deformation responses of the hydrogel also allow for its use as an on-skin sensor. This work provides an alternative strategy for designing next-generation EMI shielding materials and a highly efficient method for fabricating MXene composites on a macroscopic scale.

Summary: Combining photocatalysis with sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process (SR-AOPs) is an efficient strategy for degrading organic pollution. In this study, a Z-scheme CuFe2O4/MnO2 composite catalyst was successfully fabricated by the hydrothermal method, showing higher catalytic activity compared to pure CuFe2O4. The effects of catalyst concentration, pH, and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) concentration were studied, and the results indicated that h(+), SO4 center dot-, and (OH)-O-center dot were the main reaction species for phenol oxidation.
