Construction phosphorus/nitrogen-containing flame-retardant and hydrophobic coating toward cotton fabric via layer-by-layer assembly

Xiao-Hui Shi et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed an effective multilayer coating by assembling phosphorylated polyethyleneimine (P-PEI) and hydrophobic modified ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) on the surface of cotton fabric, resulting in high flame retardancy and desirable hydrophobicity. The coated cotton fabric exhibited self-extinguishing behavior in vertical burning tests and showed a significant decrease in heat release and fire growth rate index. The multilayer coating contributed to flame retardant activities in both condensed- and gas-phase, forming thermally stable char residues and inhibiting the release of flammable gases.

Wei Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of polymer materials were treated by heated CH3SiCl3, resulting in materials with desirable photo-thermal conversion function and hydrophobicity. Detailed analysis of the treated pomelo peel foam revealed that the surface carbonization reaction and formation of CH3-SiO2 nanoparticles contribute to its well-hydrophobicity and photo-thermal conversion performance. Moreover, the treatment significantly increased the BET surface area and the pomelo peel-derived carbon foam exhibited excellent adsorption capacity and removal efficiency.

Carbon nanofiber based superhydrophobic foam composite for high performance oil/water separation

Zheng Guo et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to fabricate flexible and superhydrophobic foam composites for efficient oil/water separation by decorating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a hollow structure uniformly onto the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foam skeleton. The CNFs not only enhance the surface roughness and hydrophobicity, but also act as numerous capillary tubes, improving oil adsorption and oil/water separation performance. The CNFs network with strong light absorption enables the foam material to have superior photo-thermal conversion capability, excellent corrosion resistance, and the ability to adsorb various kinds of oil with different densities, resulting in high oil/water separation efficiency.
