Low Temperature Multilayer Adsorption of Methanol and Ethanol on Platinum

Aleksandra V. Selivanova et al.

Summary: The adsorption behavior of methanol and ethanol on the Pt (111) surface was studied using PM-IRRAS at different temperatures. Methanol adsorbs as amorphous solid at low temperature and crystallizes at higher temperatures. Ethanol, on the other hand, desorbs completely regardless of the warming temperature.

Critical review on recent progress of ethanol fuelled flex-fuel engine characteristics

Gurusamy Azhaganathan et al.

Summary: Ethanol-powered spark ignition engines have the potential to mitigate the crisis of fossil fuel depletion and exhaust emissions. However, the promotion of ethanol is hindered by the limitations of the conventional engine design and fuel blend diversity. Flex-fuel engine technology can overcome the fuel flexibility issue and work with a wide range of ethanol blends. This study critically analyzes the technical aspects of flex-fuel engines and evaluates the effects of ethanol blends on engine performance, material compatibility, cold starting characteristics, and unregulated emissions.

Mechanistic study of methanol oxidation on Pt(111) single crystal

Aleksandra Selivanova et al.

Summary: The oxidation of methanol on a Pt(1 1 1) single crystal surface was found to start at around 350 K, producing mainly CO2 and methyl formate. Key intermediates in the reaction include CO and formaldehyde, with formates exhibiting low thermal stability and carbonates showing extremely high thermal stability. Carbonates, along with CO, can inhibit the oxidation of methanol on the platinum surface.

Multilayer adsorption of methanol on platinum at low temperatures

Aleksandra Selivanova et al.

Summary: Research has shown that methanol adsorbed on the Pt(1 1 1) surface at 80-90K forms an amorphous condensed layer, which becomes ordered into long chains at 100K, leading to the formation of a well crystallized condensed phase.

Modeling of Hydrogen Production from Catalytic Partial Oxidation of Ethanol over a Platinum-Rhodium-Supported Catalyst

Boonlue Sawatmongkhon et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the catalytic partial oxidation of ethanol (ECPOX) for designing an onboard hydrogen production system for automotive applications. A surface reaction mechanism for ECPOX over platinum-rhodium coated on an alumina catalyst was formulated, optimized, and validated against experimental data. The model accurately predicted products and temperature profiles produced from ECPOX.
