Masking covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with loose polyamide networks for precise nanofiltration

Zhe Zhang et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising alternatives to prepare high-resolution molecular sieving nanofiltration membranes. However, the preparation of continuous and defect-free COF membranes with tunable pore sizes is still challenging. In this study, a strategy to prepare heterostructured membranes with loose polyamide networks masked COF nanofilms for precise sieving of small molecules was introduced.

Revealing the effects of terminal groups of MXene on the water desalination performance

Xinyao Ma et al.

Summary: The effects of termination group of MXene membrane on its water desalination performance were investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results showed that the surface charge features and hydrogen bond interactions significantly influenced the interactions between termination group and water. The water permeability through MXene channel with different surface terminations followed the order of F > O > OH, and the charge nature of surface terminations played a vital role in their interactions with ions.

Aysa Guvensoy-Morkoyun et al.

Summary: The outstanding water/ion selectivity of aquaporins has paved the way for the development of bioinspired desalination membranes. By functionalizing carbon nanotubes with the amino acid asparagine, it is possible to balance the trade-off between ion rejection and fast water conductivity. The incorporation of functionalized CNTs into thin film nanocomposite membranes can improve the separation environment and enhance water permeability and salt rejection.

Ozark Graphene Nanopore for Efficient Water Desalination

Zhonglin Cao et al.

Summary: The geometry of graphene nanopores plays a significant role in their water desalination performance, with the irregular ozark graphene nanopore able to reject more ions while maintaining high water permeation rate compared to circular pores. By comparing various pore shapes, including circular, triangular, rhombic, and ozark, potential physical reasons for the outstanding performance of the ozark nanopore have been revealed. The study further demonstrates the potential of graphene for efficient water desalination.

Homointerface covalent organic framework membranes for efficient desalination

Jianliang Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of bilayer COF membranes with homointerface and heterointerface were designed, achieving efficient desalination performance through manipulating the interface confinement effect. The rejection rate of homointerface COF membrane toward Na2SO4 was higher than that of heterointerface COF membranes due to the synergistic enhancement of interface-confined size sieving and Donnan effect. The homointerface TpPa-SO3H/TpPa-SO3H/MPAN membrane exhibited the highest reported performance among COF desalination membranes, with a rejection rate of 98.3% for Na2SO4 and water flux of 13.1 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1).
